Manappuram Finance has appointed veteran banker Ashish Singh as its next Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, setting the stage for one of the most consequential leadership transitions in the gold-loan company’s history.
Singh will assume office on January 1, 2027, for five years and will also become a Key Managerial Personnel of the company. His appointment remains subject to shareholder approval.
The decision was approved by Manappuram Finance’s board on August 11, 2026, according to the company’s official stock-exchange disclosure.
The timing is important: Singh has been appointed, but he has not yet taken charge. V.P. Nandakumar will continue as Managing Director and Chairperson until December 31, 2026. From January 1, 2027, Nandakumar will move into the role of Non-Executive Chairperson.

Who is Ashish Singh?
Ashish Singh is a retail-banking executive with more than 25 years of experience, particularly in rural lending, financial inclusion, branch-based banking and retail liabilities.
Before his appointment at Manappuram Finance, Singh served as Head of Retail Liabilities at IDFC FIRST Bank. He had previously headed the bank’s Bharat Banking business, with responsibility for its rural asset products and branch network.
His earlier career included senior positions at Fullerton India and ICICI Bank.
At Fullerton India, Singh was involved in the strategic development and expansion of its rural-finance business, Gram Shakti. An IDFC FIRST Bharat profile credits him with contributing to the inception and growth of the rural business during his decade-long association with Fullerton India.

Why is Ashish Singh’s appointment significant?
The appointment formally separates executive management from promoter-family leadership.
Manappuram traces its origins to a money-lending and pawn-broking business established by V.C. Padmanabhan in Valapad, Kerala, in 1949. His son, V.P. Nandakumar, took over the family business in 1986 and promoted Manappuram Finance Limited in 1992.
Nandakumar has consequently remained closely associated with both the ownership and everyday management of the company for nearly four decades.
From January 2027, operational authority will move to a professional Managing Director and CEO who is not part of the promoter family. Nandakumar will continue to lead the board as Non-Executive Chairperson but will no longer hold an executive management position.
How does Bain Capital fit into the transition?
The professionalisation of Manappuram’s leadership follows Bain Capital’s strategic investment in the company.
In March 2025, Manappuram approved a preferential issue of equity shares and warrants to two Bain Capital affiliates for an aggregate consideration of approximately ₹4,384.94 crore.
The transaction included:
- 9.29 crore equity shares at ₹236 per share
- 9.29 crore warrants, each convertible into one equity share, at ₹236 per warrant
- A mandatory open offer to Manappuram’s public shareholders
The company’s March 2025 transaction disclosure stated that Bain’s affiliates would become promoters and exercise joint control alongside V.P. Nandakumar and Sushama Nandakumar after the transaction closed.
The Reserve Bank of India subsequently approved Bain Capital’s acquisition of joint control and up to 41.66% of Manappuram’s equity capital and convertible instruments in February 2026, subject to applicable conditions.

Strong financial growth forms the backdrop
The leadership change comes as Manappuram Finance reports a significant acceleration in its gold-loan business.
According to the company’s Q1 FY2027 investor presentation, consolidated profit after tax reached ₹585 crore during the quarter ended June 30, 2026. That represented growth of 341.4% from ₹132 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
Key Q1 FY2027 figures include:
- Consolidated AUM: ₹69,635 crore, up 57.2% year-on-year
- Gold-loan AUM: ₹57,006 crore, up 97.9%
- Net interest income: ₹1,759 crore, up 25%
- Revenue from operations: ₹3,033 crore, up 34.1%
- Pre-provisioning operating profit: ₹1,007 crore, up 52.4%
- Loan-loss provisions: ₹225 crore, down 59.7%
- Consolidated net worth: ₹16,552 crore
- Capital adequacy ratio: 21.3%
Gold loans constituted approximately 82% of consolidated AUM in Q1 FY2027, based on the figures disclosed by the company. In the corresponding quarter a year earlier, gold loans accounted for about 65% of AUM.
This sharp increase illustrates both Manappuram’s current strength and the concentration challenge that the incoming leadership must manage.
While consolidated gold-loan AUM nearly doubled, non-gold AUM declined 18.5% year-on-year to ₹12,629 crore. That divergence will make the balance between core gold lending and portfolio diversification an important issue under the new management.
