The three options can appear inside the same UPI app, but they do not draw money from the same place. UPI Lite is for payments from a balance funded by the user. Credit Line on UPI is a loan facility sanctioned by a bank. RuPay Credit Card on UPI lets an eligible cardholder pay a merchant by scanning a UPI QR or using a UPI payment route.
The difference decides whether a payment needs a UPI PIN, whether interest can apply, where the transaction appears, which merchant can accept it and what happens after the payment. A ₹300 payment from UPI Lite reduces the user's Lite balance. The same ₹300 paid from a credit line creates a loan use. Paid through a RuPay credit card, it becomes part of the card account and its billing cycle.
As of 8 August 2026, UPI Lite has a ₹1,000 per-transaction limit, a ₹10,000 daily usage limit and a ₹5,000 balance limit. Credit Line on UPI and RuPay Credit Card on UPI follow UPI, bank, credit and merchant rules. This guide explains the three products, their costs, limits, setup, merchant use, safety rules, data and regulation history.

Will UPI payments become chargeable? The latest Bill status
UPI Recent Updates in 2026
UPI moved beyond payments funded only by savings and current accounts. UPI Lite added a funded balance for small payments in 2022. RBI allowed a RuPay credit-card account to be linked to UPI in the same year. In September 2023, RBI allowed banks to offer a pre-approved credit line as another UPI payment source. UPI Lite X also arrived in September 2023 for supported offline payments.
The result is a payment screen that can show the user's own money beside two forms of borrowing. The scan and approval steps can look similar, but the cost, repayment and acceptance rules are different.
UPI is the payment route, not always the source of money
UPI began as a way to move money between bank accounts. A user selected a savings or current account, scanned a QR, entered a UPI PIN and the bank account was debited.
The system now allows more types of accounts or balances to appear behind the same payment action. A UPI app may show:
- A savings or current account
- UPI Lite balance
- A pre-sanctioned credit line
- A linked RuPay credit card
- A full-KYC prepaid wallet, where supported
The QR code starts the payment. The account selected before approval decides the source of funds and the rule that applies.
This is why the words paid through UPI no longer prove that money came from a bank deposit. They describe the route. The funding source may be the user's balance or borrowed money.
What is UPI Lite?
UPI Lite is an on-device payment balance for small-value transactions. The user enables it in a supporting UPI app and adds money from a linked bank account. An eligible payment is then deducted from the Lite balance without asking for a UPI PIN each time.
The Reserve Bank's May 2026 financial inclusion strategy describes UPI Lite as a system that processes small payments without checking the payer's bank system in real time. The document says this reduces the load on the bank system and can improve payment success.
UPI Lite is not a loan. It does not create a card bill. Loading ₹2,000 into Lite moves the user's money into the Lite balance available for payments. Spending ₹250 leaves ₹1,750, subject to any later top-up or refund.

Current UPI Lite limits
| Limit | Amount |
|---|---|
| Maximum per payment | ₹1,000 |
| Cumulative use in a day | ₹10,000 |
| Maximum balance at one time | ₹5,000 |
The Reserve Bank raised the per-payment and balance limits on 4 December 2024. The earlier figures were ₹500 per transaction and ₹2,000 for the total balance. The NPCI UPI Lite page also describes the product as a PIN-free option for payments below the current ₹1,000 limit.
How UPI Lite works
The exact names differ by app, but the flow is usually:
- Open a UPI app that supports UPI Lite.
- Select the option to enable UPI Lite.
- Read and accept the terms.
- Select the linked bank account.
- Add money and approve the funding step.
- Select UPI Lite as the payment source for an eligible payment.
The app records the Lite payment history. The bank's core system is not called for each Lite payment in real time, so the bank statement may show the funding or top-up entry instead of every small payment as a separate bank-account debit.
What is Credit Line on UPI?
Credit Line on UPI allows a customer to use a pre-sanctioned bank credit line as a payment source in a UPI app. The bank first assesses the customer and approves a limit. After the facility is linked, an eligible payment can draw from that limit instead of the savings account.
RBI enabled pre-sanctioned bank credit lines through UPI in September 2023. The rule covers credit lines issued to individuals with prior consent. The bank decides the sanction, limit, price, repayment method and use controls under its approved credit policy.
In December 2024, RBI said the facility, first made available through scheduled commercial banks, would also be opened to Small Finance Banks. The NPCI Credit Line on UPI page says standard UPI limits apply, while fees, interest and other charges depend on the issuing bank.
A credit line is a loan, not an extra bank balance
Suppose a bank sanctions a ₹50,000 credit line and the user pays ₹4,000 to an eligible merchant. The available limit may fall to ₹46,000. The amount used becomes a credit exposure under the bank's terms.
The cost can differ by product. A bank may charge interest from the date of use, provide a short repayment window, collect a processing charge, set an annual fee or apply another approved price. The article should not describe Credit Line on UPI as interest-free unless the bank's written terms say so.
How Indian fintech firms learned to make money: revenue beyond normal UPI MDR
Before accepting the facility, the customer should check:
- Sanctioned and available limit
- Annual interest rate
- Annual Percentage Rate, or APR, which is the yearly cost measure shown by the lender
- Processing, renewal and service fees
- Repayment date and method
- Interest start date
- Penal charge for a missed payment
- Merchant categories that are allowed or blocked
- Whether part-payment restores the limit
- Complaint and closure process
RBI material on loan disclosure requires banks to show the cost and terms in a Key Facts Statement or equivalent disclosure for applicable individual loans. The RBI guidance on loan informationsays the borrower should be able to see the loan amount, rate, fees, repayment and penalty information.
How to link a credit line to UPI
The NPCI flow is:
- Use a UPI app that supports credit lines.
- Complete UPI registration.
- Choose Credit Line as the account type.
- Select the issuing bank.
- Select the approved credit line shown by the bank.
- Complete verification and set the payment PIN or approval method.
The option appears only when the bank has sanctioned the facility and the app supports that bank's credit-line connection. Linking does not create a loan approval by itself.
Where can a credit line be used?
The facility is built for payments to merchants that accept Credit on UPI. A QR may work for a bank-account payment but reject a credit source. The merchant type, the bank serving the merchant, the app and the lender's rules can decide the result.
NPCI's June 2026 BHIM UPI brand guidelines say the words Pay with Credit on UPI should be placed on a QR created for a specific sale only where the merchant accepts transactions from a credit account. This label helps separate a normal UPI QR from a payment point that has enabled credit acceptance.
What is RuPay Credit Card on UPI?
RuPay Credit Card on UPI lets a customer link an eligible RuPay credit card to a UPI app and use the card account for merchant payments. The customer can scan a supported merchant QR, select the linked card and approve the payment with the card's UPI PIN.
The physical card is not required at the counter. The UPI app provides the payment route, but the transaction remains a credit-card transaction for billing, limit use, refunds, interest and repayment.
RBI announced the linking of RuPay credit cards to UPI on 8 June 2022. At that time, RBI reported 26 crore UPI users and 5 crore merchants. The aim was to extend credit-card use to merchants that accepted UPI QR payments but did not have a card terminal.
How to link a RuPay credit card
NPCI lists this flow for the BHIM app:
- Open the UPI app and enter its passcode.
- Open the accounts section.
- Select Add account.
- Select Credit Card.
- Choose the issuing bank.
- Select the eligible RuPay credit card.
- Complete issuer verification.
- Set a UPI PIN for the card.
App wording and verification can differ. The mobile number registered with the UPI app should match the number held by the card issuer.
What RuPay Credit Card on UPI does not allow
NPCI states that the feature does not permit:
- Cash withdrawal at a merchant
- Person-to-person payment
- Person-to-person payment treated as a merchant payment
- Card-to-card payment
It is meant for eligible merchant purchases. Some merchant categories can be blocked under network, issuer or regulatory controls. A normal UPI payment from a bank account may therefore work at a QR where the linked credit card does not.
When does interest apply?
A RuPay credit-card payment made through UPI enters the same card account as other eligible card purchases. It is included in the card statement and uses the available credit limit.
If the total amount due is paid by the due date, the card's interest-free treatment applies according to its terms. RBI's credit-card FAQ says that when the total amount due is not cleared by the due date, the interest-free period is lost and interest may be charged from the transaction date on the outstanding amount, after adjusting payments and refunds.
Paying only the minimum amount due does not clear the full bill. It can extend repayment and increase interest cost. The UPI route does not change that card rule.

| GST | Can apply to a separately charged service | Can apply to fees and charges covered by tax rules | Can apply to card fees and some charges. Check the card statement. |
| Merchant charge | Normal UPI Lite acceptance follows the current UPI arrangement | Merchant commercial terms can apply | Merchant commercial terms can apply based on network and acceptance rules |

NPCI's verified UPI name update: what users see before sending money
Data and research
NPCI reported 23,658.35 million UPI payments worth ₹29,87,880.49 crore in July 2026. In May 2022, when RBI announced the plan to link RuPay credit cards, UPI processed 594 crore payments worth ₹10.4 lakh crore.
NPCI's press release index says biometric-authentication-based UPI transactions, including RuPay Credit Card on UPI, crossed 600 million in June 2026. That is a combined category. It should not be reported as 600 million RuPay credit-card transactions.
Latest developments
May 2026: RBI records current Lite and Lite X limits
The National Strategy for Financial Inclusion 2025-30 lists UPI Lite at ₹1,000 per payment, ₹10,000 daily use and ₹5,000 balance. It lists UPI Lite X at ₹500 per payment, ₹4,000 daily use and ₹2,000 balance.
June 2026: NPCI updates QR guidance for credit acceptance
NPCI's BHIM UPI guidelines dated 4 June 2026 state that the Pay with Credit on UPI callout should be used only on a sale-specific QR where the merchant accepts credit-account transactions.
June 2026: biometric UPI use crosses a reported milestone
NPCI's press release index says biometric-authentication-based UPI transactions, including RuPay Credit Card on UPI, crossed 600 million in June 2026. The release indicates use of alternatives to a typed PIN, but the public headline does not separate each payment source.
July 2026: total UPI volume reaches 23.66 billion
NPCI product statistics show 23.66 billion payments worth ₹29.88 lakh crore for July. The total includes UPI payment activity across products and cannot be used as a product-level count.
Safety and complaint checklist
- Check the account name shown before approving the payment.
- Check whether the selected source is Lite, bank account, credit line or credit card.
- Enter a UPI PIN only on the app's UPI PIN page. A receiver does not need the payer's PIN.
- Do not share a card OTP, UPI PIN, app passcode or screen-control access.
- Review the Lite history, credit-line account and card statement separately.
- Report an unauthorised transaction to the bank or issuer without delay.
- Keep the complaint number, transaction reference, amount, date, merchant name and screenshots.
For failed UPI merchant payments, RBI's turnaround-time framework provides auto-reversal within T+5 days and compensation of ₹100 per day for delay beyond that period. The exact classification of a RuPay card transaction or another credit transaction can decide whether the UPI or card route applies.
RBI's customer liability framework links protection in unauthorised electronic transactions to the source of the fault and how quickly the customer reports it. The first complaint should go to the bank, card issuer or payment provider. If the regulated entity does not respond within 30 days, rejects the complaint or gives an answer the customer does not accept, the customer can use the RBI complaint system under the applicable Ombudsman scheme.
News4Bharat POV
UPI is becoming an account-selection layer. The scan remains familiar, but the money behind the scan can have a different cost and legal character.
UPI Lite moves small payments away from repeated access to the bank's core system. Credit Line on UPI removes the need for a physical card to use an approved loan at a merchant. RuPay Credit Card on UPI extends card acceptance to supporting UPI QRs.
The benefit is access. The risk is that the payment screen can make borrowed money feel like bank balance. A user who pays by credit at ten small merchants may see only one action repeated: scan, select and approve. The obligation appears later in a loan account or card statement.
The next policy question is not only how many credit payments UPI can process. It is whether apps show the source, cost, outstanding amount and repayment date before and after each payment in a form that the customer can understand.
