Baroda BNP Paribas Mutual Fund has appointed Madhu Nair as its Chief Executive Officer, according to an announcement reported on August 5.
Nair will take over from Sanjay Grover, who was deputed from Bank of Baroda to manage the company after former CEO Suresh Soni stepped down. Soni’s tenure ended at the close of business on July 31, 2025.
The appointment brings an end to a year-long interim arrangement at the fund house.
Nair was serving as Managing Director and CEO of Union Mutual Fund, a position he took up in March 2024. Union Mutual Fund had not announced his replacement at the time the change was reported.
Who is Madhu Nair?
Madhu Nair, whose full name is Madhukumar Nair, has more than 26 years of experience in the mutual fund industry. He holds an MBA in Finance.
Before joining Union Mutual Fund, Nair worked with HSBC Asset Management India as Head of Institutional Business and later as Chief Sales and Distribution Officer.
He also held senior positions at Invesco Asset Management India, where he managed its retail, institutional and overseas businesses. His earlier career included roles at Kotak Mutual Fund and Kothari Pioneer Mutual Fund.
Much of Nair’s experience has been in sales and distribution. His work has involved building relationships with banks, financial advisers, companies and individual investors.

Nair Moves to a Larger Fund House
Nair joined Union Mutual Fund in 2024 when it managed assets worth around ₹13,595 crore. The fund house now manages average assets of about ₹25,600 crore across equity, debt, hybrid and other schemes.
Baroda BNP Paribas Mutual Fund operates on a larger scale, with assets of around ₹50,000 crore and 48 schemes across different categories.
The fund house was formed through the merger of Baroda Asset Management India and BNP Paribas Asset Management India in March 2022. Bank of Baroda owns 50.1 per cent of the company, while BNP Paribas Asset Management holds 49.9 per cent.
It serves more than one million investor accounts and works with over 29,400 distributors, according to information published on its official website.
The Distribution Challenge Behind the Appointment
Most reports have presented Nair’s appointment as a routine change of CEO. His career history points to a wider task.
Baroda BNP Paribas Mutual Fund has the support of Bank of Baroda’s customer and branch network, along with the investment experience of BNP Paribas. The main question is how effectively the fund house can turn this reach into more investors and regular investments.
Nair’s background in retail, institutional and bank-led distribution makes this an important part of his likely role. His appointment appears to be as much about reaching new investors as it is about managing the company.
This will matter because India’s mutual fund market is growing, but a large share of investments still comes from major cities. Fund houses are trying to reach customers in smaller cities, where awareness and access remain uneven.
Baroda BNP Paribas Mutual Fund says it has service points in more than 132 cities. Nair will now have to increase the use of this network while competing with fund houses that already have a larger share of the market.
His move also reflects another trend in the industry. Fund houses are hiring leaders with experience in sales, customer reach and bank partnerships as competition for individual investors increases.
For Nair, the role offers a larger business and access to Bank of Baroda’s reach. For Baroda BNP Paribas Mutual Fund, it brings a permanent CEO after a year under interim leadership.
