Aasif Malbari has been elevated from Global CFO to Managing Director and CEO of Godrej Consumer Products.

Mumbai, August 12, 2026: Aasif Malbari has formally taken charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL), succeeding Sudhir Sitapati in a sudden leadership change at one of India’s leading fast-moving consumer goods companies.

GCPL announced Malbari’s appointment on August 11 following Sitapati’s resignation. According to the exchange-filing-based appointment details, Malbari’s term as Managing Director and CEO is effective from August 12, 2026, for five years, subject to applicable shareholder approvals. The appointment therefore runs through August 11, 2031.

The change is particularly significant because Malbari was not an external hire. He was serving as Global Chief Financial Officer and President, Godrej Africa, giving him direct familiarity with GCPL’s strategy, financial architecture, international portfolio and operational priorities.

GCPL said he has spent around three decades across the FMCG and automobile industries, including senior roles at Godrej Consumer Products, Tata Motors and Hindustan Unilever.

Aasif Malbari Appointed Godrej Consumer MD & CEO

Malbari succeeds Sudhir Sitapati, who had led Godrej Consumer Products since 2021 and had only recently been reappointed for another five-year term.

GCPL’s board had approved Sitapati’s reappointment in May 2026 for a further five-year tenure beginning October 18, 2026. However, he subsequently resigned before that new term could commence.

According to reports based on the company’s exchange filing, Sitapati’s resignation took effect on August 11, 2026. His departure was viewed as unexpected by market analysts, especially given the recent decision to extend his tenure.

That timing has made the Aasif Malbari appointment at Godrej Consumer Products much more than a routine CEO succession.

Why Did Sudhir Sitapati Resign From Godrej Consumer?

Sitapati’s resignation has nevertheless raised questions among investors because it follows only months after his reappointment.

During his five years at the helm, analysts credited Sitapati with sharpening GCPL’s portfolio, simplifying parts of the business and making operational changes intended to strengthen long-term growth.

In his resignation communication, Sitapati pointed to the company’s accelerating growth and indicated that he believed the task he had set himself at GCPL had been substantially completed. He also offered to support his successor during the transition.

Who is Aasif Malbari?

Aasif Malbari is a veteran corporate finance and business executive with approximately three decades of experience across the FMCG and automobile sectors.

Before his elevation as Managing Director and CEO, he served as Global Chief Financial Officer of Godrej Consumer Products and President of Godrej Africa. Reuters reported that he joined GCPL as CFO in 2023.

His appointment is notable because his responsibilities at GCPL had already extended beyond conventional CFO functions.

According to the company, as Global CFO, Malbari directly oversaw business strategy and worked with leadership teams across multiple geographies to drive growth and strengthen business performance.

His career includes experience at:

  • Godrej Consumer Products Limited
  • Tata Passenger Electric Mobility
  • Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles
  • Hindustan Unilever Limited

Malbari is also a Chartered Accountant and Company Secretary. GCPL said he secured the All India First Rank in both the CA Intermediate and CA Final examinations, underscoring his strong professional finance credentials.

Aasif Malbari’s Career at Hindustan Unilever and Tata Motors

Before joining Godrej Consumer Products, Malbari served as Chief Financial Officer of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility and Director at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles.

During this period, he played a significant role in scaling the passenger vehicle and electric mobility businesses, including corporate reorganisation and a $1 billion fundraise for the electric vehicle business, according to GCPL.

The experience adds an important dimension to his profile.

Malbari enters the GCPL CEO role not only as a finance professional but as an executive who has been involved in capital raising, restructuring, strategic growth and operational transformation across large consumer-facing businesses.

What Nisaba Godrej Said About Aasif Malbari

Nisaba Godrej, Executive Chairperson of Godrej Consumer Products, has strongly backed Malbari’s elevation.

The company said Malbari brings a deep understanding of GCPL’s strategic and operating model, while his performance in Africa demonstrated the disciplined execution required for the company’s next phase of growth.

Nisaba Godrej indicated that the company wants to sharpen execution across its businesses, while Reuters reported that management sees areas such as online sales and digital marketing as requiring greater speed.

This provides an important clue to the mandate facing the new CEO.

GCPL Reports Strong Q1 FY27 Growth Before Leadership Change

The leadership transition comes just days after Godrej Consumer Products reported a strong start to FY2026-27.

For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, consolidated sales increased 19% year-on-year, supported by 9% underlying volume growth. Consolidated EBITDA rose 14%, while net profit increased 11% year-on-year.

GCPL’s standalone business recorded 12% sales growth and 7% underlying volume growth, while Indonesia sales rose 15%. Africa, USA and Middle East sales surged 47% year-on-year.

Godrej Consumer Shares Fall as Much as 10% After CEO Exit

The stock market reaction on August 12, 2026 underlined investor concern over the surprise leadership change.

Shares of Godrej Consumer Products fell as much as 10% in Wednesday trade, reaching their lowest level in more than three years, Reuters reported. At 9:24 am IST, the stock was down 8.96% at ₹932.90.

The decline came despite the company’s strong recent quarterly numbers, suggesting that the immediate market concern centred largely on the suddenness of the CEO transition and questions around leadership continuity rather than an abrupt deterioration in reported operating performance.

This interpretation is also consistent with analyst comments reported by Reuters.

Vishal Kedia Takes Over as Interim CFO

Malbari’s elevation also creates an immediate change in GCPL’s finance leadership.

With Malbari relinquishing the CFO position, Vishal Kedia has been named Interim Chief Financial Officer. Reuters said GCPL is also planning a future leadership structure involving separate CEOs for its India and international operations.

Such a structure could give the company greater management focus across its geographically diverse business, although the eventual organisational design and permanent CFO succession will remain key issues for investors to monitor.
