Her death has triggered grief and anger across Prayagraj’s legal community. The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has demanded strict action against doctors and staff of Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, where Shukla was first taken after the accident. Lawyers have alleged negligence, delay in treatment, and misbehaviour by junior doctors.
Doctors, however, have denied the allegations and filed counter-complaints accusing lawyers and attendants of assault and disruption inside the hospital.
Who Was Jagriti Shukla & What Happened?
Jagriti Shukla was a practicing advocate, living in the Jhunsi area of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. She was a member of the Allahabad High Court Bar.

On May 20, 2026, she met with a road accident around 5:30–6:00 AM, while her way to a practice session of a women lawyers' sports tournament. She suffered serious injuries. Her fellow advocates rushed her to Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital.
What happened next shocked the entire city.
Allegations Against The Hospital Staff
The lawyers said no doctor was available when they arrived. Jagriti was in a critical condition. When a junior doctor was woken up, he allegedly behaved rudely. This angered the advocates present.
Things got worse. Advocate Riya alias Rasika Aneesh Khan filed a complaint. She alleged that junior doctors locked some advocates in a room. They were allegedly assaulted. The clothes of women advocates were reportedly torn. An FIR was filed at Kotwali Police Station. It named unidentified junior doctors. Charges included assault, threats, use of sharp objects, and destruction of property.

Unrest Spreads
As news of the incident spread, hundreds of lawyers gathered at SRN Hospital. Registration counters and pharmacy services were shut, affecting patients and attendants. Shukla was later shifted to a private hospital and then referred to SGPGI Lucknow for advanced treatment.
The protest soon moved beyond the hospital. Lawyers blocked roads, including areas near Post Office Crossing and Eklavya Crossing. A group of protesters also reportedly entered the Government Press premises, where vehicles and property were vandalised. Police and PAC personnel were deployed to bring the situation under control.
Doctors' Version
Junior doctors also filed a complaint. They accused lawyers of entering hospital wards forcibly. They alleged lawyers filming the videos inside, and assaulting the medical staff.
Dr Gourav Rai of FAIMA spoke out on social media. He shared a video. He claimed it showed a law student damaging hospital property. He said this put critically ill patients at risk.

Inquiry Ordered - May 21–22
Dr VK Pandey is the Principal of Motilal Nehru Medical College. SRN Hospital operates under this college. He set up a three-member inquiry committee. The panel included Dr Mohit Jain, Dr Dilip Chaurasia, and Dr Sanjay Singh. They were asked to review CCTV footage. They were to record statements within two days.

Jagriti's condition worsened. She was referred to SGPGI Lucknow. This stands for Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. It is one of the top medical institutions in Uttar Pradesh.

Jagriti Shukla died at SGPGI Lucknow on June 8.
