The honour was presented by His Majesty King Harald V of Norway during a special ceremony. The award is Norway’s highest honour for foreign heads of government and is given in recognition of outstanding service in the interest of Norway and humanity.

The recognition comes at a time when India and Norway are working to expand their partnership beyond traditional diplomacy, with a strong focus on trade, clean energy, maritime cooperation, technology and sustainable development.

During his visit, PM Modi also attended the India-Norway Business and Research Summit in Oslo. The summit saw participation from Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon, Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, business leaders, researchers and representatives from more than 50 companies.

A key focus of the summit was the growing opportunity created by the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which is expected to boost investments, jobs and business partnerships between India and the European Free Trade Association countries, including Norway.

He also highlighted India’s ambitious green transition, including its push for renewable energy, green hydrogen, grid expansion and clean technology. In bilateral talks with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, both leaders agreed to elevate India-Norway relations to a Green Strategic Partnership. They also discussed cooperation in blue economy, ocean governance, Arctic research, higher education, space, artificial intelligence, robotics, cybersecurity, fisheries, aquaculture and talent mobility.

Both sides also agreed to work towards doubling India-Norway trade by 2030. They encouraged businesses to help meet the wider TEPA target of USD 100 billion investment and creation of one million jobs in India.

Another important outcome was Norway’s support for India’s permanent membership in a reformed United Nations Security Council. The two leaders also strongly condemned terrorism, including cross-border terrorism, and called for collective global action against the threat.

PM Modi invited Prime Minister Støre to visit India, while both leaders agreed to maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges and deepen cooperation in emerging sectors.

What Is Important for Bharat

For Bharat, PM Modi’s Norway visit is important for much more than the award. The honour reflects India’s growing global stature, but the real strategic value lies in the new areas of cooperation opened during the visit.

Norway is a global leader in clean energy, maritime technology, ocean sustainability and climate finance. These are areas where India needs strong international partnerships as it moves towards green growth and energy security.

The focus on green shipping, offshore wind, carbon capture, critical minerals, blue economy and clean technology can directly support India’s economic and environmental goals. Norwegian investment in India can also help create jobs, strengthen manufacturing, and support India’s ambition to become a global hub for sustainable industries.

The push for cooperation in AI, robotics, cybersecurity, start-ups and digital public goods is equally important. It shows that India-Norway ties are moving from traditional diplomacy to future-ready collaboration.

For Bharat, this visit signals three big gains: stronger global recognition, deeper economic opportunities, and a future-focused partnership built around green growth, technology and jobs.
