Microsoft Teams Will Now Tell Your Boss Exactly Where You Are

Imagine walking into your office and your work location updating automatically without you doing anything. That is exactly what Microsoft Teams location tracking feature is designed to do.

Microsoft has begun rolling out the new feature in Teams from June 2026. Available on both Windows and macOS, it can automatically update an employee's work location status. While the company says the feature will help teams coordinate better, it has raised privacy concerns, with some employees worried that it could give employers more insight into their office attendance and daily work routines.

A simple Wi-Fi connection. A location update. And suddenly, your manager knows exactly where you are.

How Deep Does the Tracking Go?

When an employee connects their device to the company's Wi-Fi network, Teams can automatically detect that they are at work and update their location status for colleagues. In some offices, the feature may even be able to identify the specific building or area where the employee is working, depending on how the network is set up.

Here's what the feature can reveal:

  • Whether you are working from the office or remotely.
  • Which office building or floor you are currently on.
  • Your location when your device is connected to office equipment, such as a docking station.

Microsoft Says Trust Us. Employees Say Show Us.

Microsoft says the feature only works during office hours and stops updating location once the workday ends. However, experts warn that it could still raise concerns about employee monitoring and privacy.

Microsoft has rejected claims that the feature is a surveillance tool, saying employee privacy remains a top priority. The company has also clarified that the feature is turned off by default and can only be used if both administrators enable it and employees choose to opt in.

However, some experts believe the situation may not be that simple. While the feature is technically optional, employees could still feel pressured to turn it on if their managers encourage its use. In most offices, 'optional' and 'manager-approved' rarely mean the same thing."

Your Boss Is Watching. And the Numbers Are Terrifying.

The new feature comes at a time when workplace monitoring is already on the rise. A recent MIT study found that 4 out of 5 companies track remote or hybrid employees in some way, while research by Gartner showed that 71% of employees are now digitally monitored, up from 30% a year earlier. Another survey found that 75% of workers reported losing trust in their employer after monitoring tools were introduced.

At the same time, Microsoft has been pushing more employees back to the office, requiring many staff living near a company office to work onsite at least three days a week. With employee monitoring increasing and return-to-office policies expanding, many workers are beginning to ask an important question: where does workplace coordination end and surveillance begin? Today it shows your building. Tomorrow, nobody knows how far it goes.
