Is OnePlus actually shutting down?
The phrase “OnePlus shutdown” now describes several different developments that are often being mixed together.

Then why are people saying OnePlus will leave India in 2027?
This comes from reporting about OPPO's wider restructuring.

Reports in March said OnePlus had asked partner-run exclusive stores in India to close operations by March 31 as the company shifted towards online sales and direct distribution. Three company-owned locations in Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru were expected to remain.

This creates one of the more difficult parts of the company's India strategy.
IDC says India's smartphone market shipped 31 million units in Q1 2026, down 4.1% year on year. More importantly for OnePlus's strategy, offline channels accounted for 62% of smartphone shipments, compared with 58% a year earlier. Online channel share fell from 42% to 38%, with online shipments declining 14%.
That means OnePlus reduced much of its exclusive physical retail footprint at a time when almost two-thirds of India's smartphone shipments were going through offline channels.
For a brand selling phones in the ₹30,000 to ₹70,000 range, that can matter.
A buyer spending that amount may want to:

6 Reasons Why is OnePlus pulling back
OnePlus's official exit notice gives only a broad reason. It says the company made the decision after evaluating the business.

There are at least six factors.
OnePlus lost most of its US volume
OnePlus once had a larger presence in the United States.
According to industry data cited by Wired, US OnePlus shipments fell from around 1 million units in 2019 to just under 130,000 in 2025.
That is a decline of roughly 87%.
Counterpoint told TechCrunch that OnePlus's US shipment share had fallen below 1% by 2025.

A smartphone company needs local staff, marketing, certification, distribution, software support, customer care, warehousing and repair systems to maintain a market.
Those costs become harder to justify when the sales base becomes small.
2. The loss of US carrier distribution hurt OnePlus
The US smartphone market is different from India.
A large share of American smartphones is sold through mobile carriers rather than only through independent online marketplaces.
OnePlus had previously built US visibility through T-Mobile. As that relationship weakened and OnePlus became less visible in carrier stores, its ability to reach mainstream US buyers declined.
Wired, citing market analysis, noted that carriers accounted for about two-thirds of US smartphone volume in 2025.
For a company with limited carrier distribution, even a strong device can struggle to reach buyers.
3. OnePlus also lost ground in India
India has remained a much more important market for OnePlus, but the numbers moved in the wrong direction.
IDC data for Q1 2026 put OnePlus at about 1.7% of Indian smartphone shipments. Separate reporting on the IDC dataset shows OnePlus shipments falling about 32% year on year.
CMR measured the fall at 28% year on year for Q1, with the OnePlus 15 series generating about 48% of the brand's volume and the Nord portfolio accounting for another 39%.
Different research firms use different channel datasets, so their percentages should not be treated as identical measures.
They point in the same direction: OnePlus entered 2026 with weaker shipment momentum in India.
4. The overall smartphone market has also become harder
OnePlus's problems are not happening in a growing volume market.
IDC says India's smartphone shipments fell 4.1% year on year in Q1 2026 to 31 million units. The average selling price reached a record $302, up 10.4%, as memory costs increased and consumers faced higher device prices.
Counterpoint separately recorded a 3% shipment fall in Q1 and a further sharp market decline in Q2.
The pressure comes from both directions. Manufacturers face higher component costs. Consumers face higher phone prices.
That creates less room for a brand whose original promise was based on providing more hardware for less money.
5. OnePlus moved away from its original price position
The first OnePlus One launched in India at ₹21,999 for the 64GB version.
By 2026, the brand was operating at prices that overlap much more directly with Samsung, Apple, Google and other established premium-phone makers.

OnePlus and OPPO already share a large amount of technology, software development and supply-chain infrastructure.
The next software change makes that connection even clearer.
OnePlus says eligible users in affected Western markets will be offered ColorOS after the release of ColorOS 17.
This means OPPO can support OnePlus hardware without maintaining the same level of separate software identity indefinitely.
From a corporate-cost perspective, combining more software work can reduce duplication.

India is not in the same position as the US and Europe.
OnePlus remains commercially active in India as of August 11.
