India's AI race is moving from apps and chatbots to electricity, servers, fibre networks and physical infrastructure.

That is what makes the Reliance-Meta AI data centre deal important.

Reliance Industries and Meta announced on June 10, 2026 that Reliance will build a 168-megawatt AI-enabled data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat, which Meta will lease. The project is expected to be delivered within two years and includes an option to expand capacity later.

It will be Meta's first purpose-built AI data-centre capacity in India.

Reliance will do much more than construct the building. It will handle design, construction, utilities, renewable electricity, network connectivity and ongoing operations. The facility will use renewable energy and desalinated seawater for cooling, while Meta says it will bear the full cost of the energy and water used for its operations.

That sounds like an infrastructure contract.

It is actually part of a much bigger contest over where the world's future AI computing power will sit.

What Exactly Have Reliance and Meta Agreed To?

The first phase will provide 168 MW of data-centre capacity.

That is the amount of computing infrastructure the facility can support, rather than the electricity used by one individual server.

Meta will lease the capacity. Reliance will build and manage it.

The financial value of the agreement has not been publicly disclosed.

Neither company has revealed how many GPUs or other AI processors will be installed, which Meta services will use the site first or how large the facility could eventually become.

How Big Is 168 MW?

The number needs context.

India had around 1.5 GW of operational data-centre capacity in 2025, according to industry estimates cited by Deloitte. Capacity could rise to 8 to 10 GW by 2030 as AI, cloud computing and local data demand expand.

A 168 MW facility is therefore equivalent to around 11% of India's entire 2025 data-centre capacity, purely as a scale comparison.

It does not mean Meta will own 11% of India's future market. India's overall capacity will be much larger by the time Jamnagar is fully operational.

But it shows how large individual AI projects are becoming.

Why Did Meta Choose Jamnagar?

Jamnagar may seem like an unusual location for a global technology company's AI infrastructure.

It makes more sense when Reliance's assets are considered together.

Reliance already has major industrial and energy operations in the region. It is also building large AI computing infrastructure in Jamnagar and has access to renewable-energy projects, Jio's fibre network and western India's international connectivity routes.

Reliance says Jamnagar benefits from renewable-energy access, water availability, Jio's network and proximity to western submarine cable landing stations.

Meta also points to its own international cable investments, including Project Waterworth, as part of the connectivity strategy around the Indian facility.

What Remains Undisclosed

The Deal Goes Back Further Than Data Centres

Reliance and Meta have been building their relationship for years.

Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms in 2020, one of its largest bets on an Indian company.

The relationship then moved from telecom and digital commerce into artificial intelligence.

In 2025, Reliance and Meta set up Reliance Enterprise Intelligence Limited to build enterprise AI services. Reliance Intelligence holds 70% while Meta's subsidiary holds 30%, with an initial committed investment of around ₹855 crore.

That venture focuses on bringing enterprise AI, including Meta's Llama ecosystem, to Indian organisations.

Why This Deal Matters for India's AI Ambitions

India has one obvious advantage in the global AI market: users.

It has one of the world's largest internet populations, hundreds of millions of smartphone users, a huge software workforce and one of the biggest markets for digital payments and online services.

But AI leadership requires something India historically had less of: large-scale computing infrastructure.

That gap is starting to close.

Under the IndiaAI Mission, the government said in March 2026 that more than 38,000 GPUs had been onboarded for its common computing facility, giving startups and academic institutions access to subsidised AI computing. The IndiaAI Mission itself carries an outlay of ₹10,372 crore.

The government had also announced plans to add another 20,000 GPUs as part of the next phase of compute expansion.

The Reliance-Meta facility sits alongside that public investment.

India Is Becoming a Global AI Infrastructure Battleground

Meta is far from alone.

Google announced approximately $15 billion of investment between 2026 and 2030 for an AI hub in Visakhapatnam. Google describes the project as its largest investment in India and says it will include gigawatt-scale computing infrastructure and new international connectivity.

Microsoft announced another $17.5 billion investment over four years from 2026 to 2029, on top of an earlier $3 billion commitment, to expand cloud and AI infrastructure and operations in India.

On August 6, 2026, Microsoft opened its largest Indian data-centre hub in Hyderabad, taking the company to four cloud regions in the country.

Amazon said in June that it would invest an additional $13 billion in AI and cloud infrastructure in India, taking its planned investment for 2026 to 2030 to $48 billion when its broader India commitments are included.

Government Policy Is Helping Accelerate the Shift

India is actively trying to attract this investment.

The Union Budget 2026-27 proposed a tax holiday until 2047 for eligible foreign companies providing cloud services to global customers through data centres located in India.

Services sold to Indian customers would have to go through an Indian reseller under the proposed framework. The Budget also proposed a 15% safe-harbour margin on cost for certain related data-centre entities.

What Could This Mean for Indian Businesses?

For Indian companies, the biggest benefit may eventually be practical rather than geopolitical.

More AI computing capacity inside India can increase competition between infrastructure providers.

That could improve availability and, over time, put pressure on prices.

  • For SaaS companies, local AI infrastructure could make it easier to build products that process sensitive customer information closer to Indian users.
  • For banks, insurers and financial-services companies, domestic infrastructure can make architecture, security and regulatory planning simpler for workloads that need tighter control.
  • For large Indian enterprises, local infrastructure can also reduce the distance between their data and the computing systems running AI models.

This becomes particularly important as companies move from experimenting with chatbots to using AI inside customer service, fraud detection, software development, manufacturing, analytics, lending and internal operations.

The Bigger Meaning for India

India's first internet boom was about connecting people. The smartphone boom was about putting affordable computing into their hands.

The cloud boom was about giving businesses access to computing without building their own server rooms.

The AI boom is different.

It demands industrial-scale infrastructure.

The Reliance-Meta agreement shows that the competition is moving underground and behind warehouse walls, into fibre routes, power plants, cooling systems and rows of processors.

India already has users.

It already has developers.

It already has one of the world's largest digital markets.

The missing piece has been the scale of computing infrastructure available inside the country.

That is now changing quickly.

The Reliance-Meta AI data centre deal does not make India an AI superpower by itself.
