Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has confirmed that NEET UG will be conducted fully in computer based test mode from 2027. This brings an end to the pen and paper format that has defined India's largest medical entrance exam since it started. For a test that over 2.2 million students attempt every year, this is not a small update. It is one of the biggest structural changes NEET has seen.
Most reports on NEET CBT 2027 stop at the announcement. This piece goes further. It looks at why this decision came now, what changes for students, what does not change, and one major challenge that has barely been discussed anywhere else.
Why NEET CBT 2027 Is Happening Now
The story behind NEET CBT 2027 starts with the 2024 NEET UG controversy, which led to the formation of the Radhakrishnan committee. This panel studied how the exam was conducted and suggested changes to protect its integrity. Those recommendations were put in place.
Yet on May 3, 2026, NEET UG was conducted again using the OMR based pen and paper system. On May 12, 2026, the National Testing Agency cancelled the exam after discovering that close to 120 questions in a leaked guess paper matched the real question paper. A guess paper is a set of likely questions prepared by coaching experts based on old exam trends. When that many questions overlapped with the actual paper, it pointed to a serious leak.
A re-exam was held on June 21, 2026, still in pen and paper mode, with students given 15 extra minutes to make up for the stress of the situation. It was after this that Pradhan stated the root problem was the OMR system itself, not just enforcement gaps, and announced that NEET would shift to CBT from the next cycle.

The total marks remain at 720. The subject structure across physics, chemistry and biology stays the same. The syllabus is not changing because of this announcement. The comparison with JEE Main matters here. That exam already deals with multiple shifts and normalization every year. NEET is now walking into the same territory, at a much larger scale. The real test for NEET CBT 2027 will not be the announcement. It will be execution in 2027, when shift schedules, centre allocation and normalization formulas become public.
