Renu Bhatia's Controversial Remarks on Nurses

On June 7, 2026, Bhatia visited Kurukshetra's Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Civil Hospital for inspection. What she said there triggered the nurses' protest across Haryana.
During her visit, she questioned the nursing staff. She asked one nursing officer directly:

"If she were your daughter, would you leave her alone in a room with someone for 15 minutes?"
— Renu Bhatia

She went further. She stated: "The girl was left alone with the doctor. All the nurses were involved in the conspiracy." She also ordered the suspension of three nurses who were on duty at the time.
The nurses accused Bhatia of blaming them for negligence and possible collusion in the case.

Nurses Strike Back — Literally

The Nursing Officers Welfare Association Haryana was furious. Nurses across the state refused to stay silent.
Here is what happened step by step:

  • Nurses at LNJP Hospital observed a two-hour pen-down strike to protest Bhatia's remarks.
  • Nurses reached Kurukshetra University police station and submitted a complaint against Renu Bhatia.
  • The nursing staff raised slogans and demanded her arrest.
  • They also threatened to file a defamation case against her.
  • Protests spread and led to demonstrations at several places on Tuesday.

Nursing officer Monika added:

"She kept criticising the nurses without even knowing the facts. Even though she has resigned, she hasn't apologised."

Renu Bhatia Resignation Reason — Family or Nurses' Protest?

Bhatia sent her resignation letter to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Tuesday. But she refused to connect her exit to the nurses' protest.

She said she was resigning due to personal family reasons and told reporters: "I am going to Japan for 20 days, and then I am going to meet my daughter in the US, and I will be out for three months."
She was also very clear — she would not apologise for her remarks.
Her resignation letter simply said: "I am currently resigning from this post. So, please accept my resignation." She also added that she would continue working for women's rights.

After the Resignation — What Changed?

After Bhatia's resignation, nurses withdrew their two-hour pen-down strike. They said they did it to avoid inconvenience to patients. But they did NOT drop their demands. Senior nursing officer Anita said:

"The Chairperson has resigned, but she has not withdrawn her statements. She has hurt the sentiments of the nursing cadre. We will continue the struggle legally."

The Haryana government has not yet announced a successor to Renu Bhatia as the Haryana State Commission for Women Chairperson.

One Resignation — But Many Big Questions Remain

  • This is rare in Haryana. A group of healthcare workers protested — and a top government official had to resign because of it.
  • A women's rights official blamed nurses without any proof. Most nurses are women. This raises a serious question — where is the fairness?
  • The Nursing Officers Welfare Association Haryana proved one thing. Healthcare workers will not stay silent when blamed unfairly. They will fight back.
  • One big question nobody is asking — who allowed the accused doctor to rejoin after retirement? His past record was already known. Why did officials ignore it?

Final Words

The Renu Bhatia Haryana Women Commission resignation is more than just one person stepping down. It is a story about power, accountability, and the rights of working women.

The Kurukshetra hospital sexual assault case 2026 rightly demanded quick justice. But blaming nurses without proof made a bad situation much worse. The nurses' protest across Haryana showed the world that they demand respect and fair treatment.

As Haryana looks for a new Women Commission Chairperson, the state must ensure that women in all professions — including nursing — receive fairness and dignity.
