Stock Market Today August 7 2026 Sensex Nifty market update

Indian stock markets ended Friday lower, with selling in finance shares and a rise in crude oil prices weighing on the benchmarks. The fall, however, was not enough to wipe out the gains built during the week.

The latest NSE/BSE-linked closing feed available at publication time showed the Nifty 50 at 24,552.80, down 83.20 points or 0.34%, while the BSE Sensex stood at 78,473.82, down 480.94 points or 0.61%.

Bank Nifty fell 250.50 points, or 0.43%, to 57,813.15, while the Nifty Financial Services index dropped 1.31% to 26,511.30. The Midcap Nifty moved in the other direction, gaining 50.30 points, or 0.34%, to 14,862.90.

How Did the Market Perform This Week?

Despite Friday's decline, both benchmark indices remained higher for the week.

The Nifty 50 had closed at 24,383.60 on July 31. At Friday's latest level of 24,552.80, the index is up 169.20 points, or about 0.69%, for the week.

The Sensex had ended July 31 at 78,094.64. At 78,473.82 on Friday, it is higher by 379.18 points, or about 0.49%, for the week.

Sensex78,094.6478,473.82+379.18+0.49%

The weekly gain follows a month in which the Nifty had risen 2.2% in July and the Sensex had gained 2.1%. Foreign investors also returned to Indian shares during July, with net purchases of about $1.6 billion, after selling about $29.3 billion in the first six months of 2026.

This means the market enters the second week of August with two forces working against each other. Foreign money has started returning after the first-half sell-off, but oil prices, inflation data and company results remain capable of changing that flow.

Why Did the Market Fall Today?

Finance shares were one of the main reasons for Friday's decline.

Bajaj Finance fell 5.63% to ₹1,080.40, while Bajaj Finserv declined 4.03% to ₹2,002. The two stocks had already started falling in morning trade after a draft proposal from the Reserve Bank of India raised concerns over restrictions on some revolving credit products offered by non-bank lenders.

The impact was visible in the Nifty Financial Services index, which ended down 1.31%, a bigger fall than the Nifty 50 or Bank Nifty.

Oil was the other issue.

Brent crude moved above $84 a barrel during Friday's session, rising for a third session as concerns continued over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. India imports most of the crude oil it consumes, so an increase in international oil prices raises the country's import bill and can put pressure on inflation, the rupee and company costs.

Stocks in Focus Today: Gainers and Losers

Among the stocks for which end-of-session NSE/BSE-linked prices could be verified, Britannia Industries and State Bank of India were among the gainers, while Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv and Hero MotoCorp ended lower.

StockPriceFriday changeFive-day change
Britannia Industries₹5,514.00+2.04%-0.19%
State Bank of India₹1,105.60+1.90%+7.83%
Reliance Industries₹1,329.00+0.30%+2.79%

Bajaj Finserv₹2,002.00-4.03%+4.85%
Bajaj Finance₹1,080.40-5.63%+2.55%

  • State Bank of India was one of the stocks watched after its quarterly numbers. SBI reported standalone net profit of ₹21,121 crore for the June quarter, up 10.2% from a year earlier. Its shares ended at ₹1,105.60, up 1.90% for the day and 7.83% over five sessions.
  • Britannia Industries ended at ₹5,514, up 2.04%. It had gained as much as 3.8% in morning trade after reporting a rise in quarterly profit. Its five-day return, however, remained slightly below zero at minus 0.19%.
  • Hero MotoCorp showed how quickly the direction of a stock can change during an earnings session. The stock was up more than 3% during morning trade after the company reported 29% growth in June-quarter profit, but ended the session at ₹5,550.50, down 2.45%. Despite Friday's fall, the stock was still up 7.80% over five sessions.
  • Bajaj Finance was the main verified loser among these market-moving stocks. It ended 5.63% lower at ₹1,080.40. Even after Friday's fall, the stock remained 2.55% higher over five sessions.
  • Bajaj Finserv fell 4.03% to ₹2,002 but remained 4.85% higher over five sessions.
  • The five-day figures also show why Friday's fall should not be read as the story of the entire week. SBI and Hero MotoCorp were still up about 7.8% over five sessions, while Bajaj Finance and Bajaj Finserv retained part of the gains built earlier in the week.

Data note: NSE's live top-gainers and top-losers table changes during the closing process. The table above therefore uses stocks whose NSE/BSE-linked prices and five-day returns could be verified at publication time. It should be read as a verified list of market-moving stocks, rather than a claim that it reproduces the exchange's final top-20 ranking.

New Closing Auction Changes the Last 15 Minutes of Trading

The week was also the first under India's new stock closing process for shares linked to futures and options contracts.

Under the system introduced from August 3, regular trading in these shares stops at 3:15 pm, after which a closing auction is used to determine the official closing price.

The change caused swings in index closing levels during the first few sessions. On Thursday, the Nifty finished 0.05% higher, while the Sensex ended 0.48% higher at 78,954.76. Reuters reported that the Sensex moved by nearly 170 points between 3:15 pm and its final close on Thursday because of the new process and the expiry of weekly contracts linked to the index.

The development matters because the number visible at 3:15 pm can now differ from the official closing price. Investors and newsrooms will have to pay more attention to the auction window before treating a 3:15 pm index value as the day's close.

Earnings Continue to Drive Individual Stocks

Quarterly results remained one of the main reasons for differences between individual stock moves this week.

SBI reported ₹21,121 crore in standalone June-quarter net profit, up 10.2% year on year.

Hero MotoCorp reported 29% growth in June-quarter profit, helping the stock build gains earlier in the week even though it fell on Friday.

Britannia's earnings helped its shares rise on Friday. Bajaj Finance and Bajaj Finserv, in contrast, were hit by the RBI draft proposal despite company-level developments elsewhere in the financial sector.

The result has been a market in which the benchmark movement alone does not tell the full story. Stocks reacting to earnings or regulation have moved by several percentage points even on days when the Nifty itself has changed by less than 1%.

IPO Market: LEAP India and Ardee Industries in Focus This Week

The primary market also remained active.

LEAP India IPO

KKR-backed supply-chain company LEAP India's IPO opened on August 7 and will remain open until August 11.

Reuters reported that the company is seeking a valuation of about ₹7,000 crore. The IPO is worth about $260 million, equivalent to roughly ₹2,480 crore at the exchange rate cited in the filing.

The issue includes new shares worth about $50.3 million, with the rest coming from shares being sold by existing holders. LEAP India's shares are expected to begin trading on August 14.

The company reported FY2026 net profit of ₹62.34 crore, up 66%, while revenue increased 56.4% to about ₹730 crore.

Ardee Industries IPO

The ₹425.87 crore Ardee Industries IPO closed for subscription on Friday.

As of 2:15 pm on its final day, the issue had received bids for about 66 times the shares offered, according to subscription data reported by The Economic Times.

The IPO was priced at ₹50 to ₹53 per share and included ₹320 crore of new shares and ₹105.87 crore of shares sold by existing holders.

Ardee Industries is expected to list on the BSE and NSE on August 12.

The company reported FY2025-26 total income of ₹1,168.9 crore, compared with ₹743.5 crore a year earlier, while net profit rose to ₹84.7 crore from ₹33.3 crore.

Dhoot Transmission has fixed a price band of ₹829 to ₹871 per share for its ₹3,067 crore IPO, which will open on Monday, August 10 and close on August 12.

Milky Mist Dairy Food will open its ₹1,553 crore IPO from August 11 to August 13, with institutional bidding scheduled a day earlier on August 10.

What to Watch in the Stock Market Next Week

The market will enter the week beginning August 10 with the Nifty above 24,500 and the Sensex above 78,000, but the direction could depend on a set of domestic and global events.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has scheduled the Quarterly Bulletin of the Periodic Labour Force Survey for April to June 2026 for August 10, followed by the All India Consumer Price Index for August 12.

Inflation will be the first number to watch

The RBI kept the repo rate at 5.25% this week. The July consumer inflation figure on August 12 will therefore be read alongside that decision.

June consumer inflation was reported at 4.38%, according to data cited following the RBI meeting. A move higher or lower in July will influence expectations around what the RBI may do at its next policy meeting.

Oil remains a market factor

Brent crude above $84 a barrel has again put oil on the market's agenda.

If crude continues to rise next week, companies that use fuel as a major input could face pressure, while concerns around India's import bill and inflation could return. If oil falls, one source of pressure on the market would reduce.

Foreign investment flows will matter

July marked a change in foreign investor activity. After net selling of $29.3 billion in the first half of 2026, foreign investors bought about $1.6 billion of Indian shares in July.

Whether those inflows continue in August will matter for the Nifty, Sensex and the rupee, especially if oil remains above recent levels.

Company results will keep moving stocks

SBI, Hero MotoCorp, Britannia and other companies showed this week that results can produce moves far larger than the daily change in the benchmark indices.

Investors will therefore continue to track earnings numbers, revenue, profit, costs and management comments rather than relying only on the Nifty or Sensex direction.

The closing auction will remain under watch

The market has completed only its first week under the new closing auction system.

Thursday showed that the Sensex could still move by more than 100 points after the normal 3:15 pm trading window for affected shares had ended. The difference between the 3:15 pm reading and the final close will remain an issue to watch as traders and brokers adjust to the system.
