The Sensex and Nifty opened in opposite directions on Tuesday, creating an unusual picture on Dalal Street. The Nifty reversed part of Monday’s closing-auction surge, while the Sensex remained modestly positive. LIC’s 8% fall, weakness across 15 of 16 major sectors, the weekly F&O expiry and caution before the RBI policy decision increased volatility.
At 9:15 AM IST, the NSE Nifty 50 fell 166.40 points, or 0.67%, to 24,607.90, while the BSE Sensex gained approximately 123.51 points, or 0.20%, to 78,762.54. Reuters reported the exchange-linked opening readings.
Fifteen of the 16 major NSE sectors opened lower. The Nifty Midcap 100 declined around 0.2%, but the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained approximately 0.4%.
Why is the Nifty falling while the Sensex is rising?
Monday’s closing-auction jump is reversing
The principal explanation lies in India’s new closing-price mechanism rather than a sudden deterioration in the economic outlook.
On Monday, the Nifty jumped approximately 200 points during the Closing Auction Session, driven by movements of at least 1% in around 12 index heavyweights, HDFC Securities’ Head of Prime Research Devarsh Vakil told Reuters.
The Nifty consequently closed 1.6% higher, while the Sensex gained only 0.7%. Tuesday’s opening reversed a substantial part of that auction-led move.
The benchmarks also contain different stocks and weights. This allows the Sensex to rise while the broader 50-stock Nifty falls.
Calling Tuesday’s movement a market crash would therefore be misleading: the Sensex is positive and small-caps are higher, although weak sector breadth still signals caution.
Fifteen sectors decline
The auction explanation does not remove every warning sign. Fifteen of 16 major sectors opened lower, indicating that selling extended beyond a few Nifty heavyweights.
Readers should monitor the official NSE advance-decline data. Improving breadth would support the auction-unwind explanation. Continued weakness would suggest broader profit-booking before the RBI decision.

What investors need to know about the new closing auction
For covered F&O shares:
- Continuous cash trading ends at 3:15 PM.
- The Closing Auction Session runs from 3:15 PM to 3:35 PM.
- Equity derivatives trade until 3:40 PM.
- The post-close cash session operates from 3:50 PM to 4 PM.
The mechanism replaced the earlier closing price based on the volume-weighted average during the final 30 minutes of continuous trading.
Monday demonstrated that concentrated auction orders can cause sharp movements in individual stocks and the official index close. The displayed Nifty close of 24,774.30 was official, and Reuters reported that there was no technical glitch.
Publishers should no longer use the 3:15 PM last continuous-market price as the official closing price for covered securities.
LIC shares fall 8% as government OFS opens
LIC was the biggest stock-specific drag, falling around 8% after the government’s Offer for Sale opened for non-retail investors.
The offer has:
- Base stake sale: 2.5%
- Green-shoe option: Additional 4%
- Maximum possible stake sale: 6.5%
- Floor price: ₹382 per share
- Monday’s closing price: ₹424.35
- Potential total proceeds: Approximately ₹31,410 crore
- Retail bidding date: August 5
The decline does not automatically indicate deterioration in LIC’s operations. A discounted OFS increases the available supply of shares and can pull the market price towards the offer level.

RBI policy tomorrow
The RBI’s monetary-policy decision is scheduled for 10 AM IST on August 5.
A Reuters poll found that 68 of 72 economists expected the repo rate to remain unchanged at 5.25%. With a hold largely anticipated, investors will focus on the RBI’s assessment of:
- Inflation and food prices
- Crude-oil volatility
- Economic growth
- Rupee stability
- Banking-system liquidity
- Future interest-rate risks
The rupee closed nearly unchanged at 95.3375 per dollar on August 3. Importer demand for dollars offset much of the support created by cheaper oil, showing that underlying hedging demand remains strong. Reuters’ RBI policy preview provides the expectations.
Commodities market update
Crude oil rebounds
Brent crude recovered 1.3% to $84.89 per barrel, while WTI rose 1% to $81.11.
Iran denied that negotiations with the United States were taking place, restoring part of oil’s geopolitical premium. Before the conflict, the Strait of Hormuz carried around one-fifth of global crude and natural-gas shipments, Reuters reported.
For India, Brent remaining in the mid-$80s is considerably less damaging than a sustained move above $90. Airlines, paints, tyres, chemicals, logistics and oil-marketing companies remain sensitive to crude’s duration and direction.
Gold and silver
Spot gold gained 0.2% to $4,059.81 an ounce. Silver rose 1% to $58.74, platinum advanced 1.2% to $1,646.59 and palladium gained 1.2% to $1,279.55.
Markets are balancing Middle East risks against upcoming US employment data and expectations for American interest rates, according to Reuters’ bullion report.

Editor's Take on Stock Market Today
The most revealing figure is not Tuesday’s 166-point Nifty fall. It is Monday’s approximately 200-point closing-auction jump.
For illustration—not as an alternative official close—subtracting that auction movement from Monday’s 24,774.30 level produces a reference near 24,574. Tuesday’s opening at 24,607.90 would be slightly above that reference.
This does not replace or “correct” the official Nifty close. It simply helps readers separate the auction effect from the underlying market direction.
