In a landmark moment for India’s aviation sector, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the first phase of the Noida International Airport at Jewar, accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The ceremony marks the official opening of one of the country’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, after facing multiple delays over the past two years.
Scheduled at around 12 noon, the inauguration signals the beginning of operations at what is poised to become a major international gateway for North India. The airport, located in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, will function as the second international airport serving the Delhi-NCR region alongside Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to government officials, both airports will operate as an integrated aviation network, aimed at reducing congestion at IGI Airport while significantly expanding passenger handling capacity. This dual-airport system is expected to elevate Delhi-NCR’s status among global aviation hubs.
The Noida International Airport is strategically positioned to serve key cities across Uttar Pradesh, including Noida, Ghaziabad, Meerut, Mathura, and Agra. Beyond urban connectivity, it is also set to become a crucial gateway for tourists and pilgrims visiting prominent destinations in the region.
To ensure smooth movement during the high-profile event, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Traffic Police implemented a detailed traffic advisory. Entry routes were carefully planned, parking zones designated, and commercial vehicles diverted to avoid disruptions. The advisory remained in effect from 7 AM to 11 PM, with special provisions made for emergency services such as ambulances and fire vehicles.
Notably, the airport’s journey to inauguration has seen several postponements. Initially scheduled for launch in December 2024, the opening was pushed to April 2025, then to September 2025, and finally materialized in early 2026.
Following the inauguration, the Prime Minister is expected to address a public gathering, highlighting the significance of the project in strengthening India’s infrastructure and connectivity landscape.
