It is not common for an American President to post congratulations for a Lieutenant Governor appointment in India. But the appointment of Taranjit Singh Sandhu as Delhi's Lt Governor appears to have made a genuinely personal impression on Donald Trump. On April 17, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, calling Sandhu a "seasoned diplomat" and wishing him success in "leading Delhi's progress, and furthering global ties."
Who is Taranjit Singh Sandhu?
Sandhu is one of India's most accomplished diplomats in the post-liberalisation era. A career Indian Foreign Service officer with over 30 years of experience, he served as India's Ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2024 — a period that included some of the most consequential years in US-India relations: the COVID-19 period, the Quad's reinvigoration, India-US defence agreements, and the 2023 Modi state visit to Washington.
He is also the grandson of Teja Singh Samundri, a prominent Sikh leader — a lineage that carries weight in both Punjab's political circles and the large Sikh diaspora community in the United States and Canada, both key constituencies for any diplomat managing bilateral ties.
Sandhu took the oath of office as Delhi's Lt Governor on March 11, 2026, in the presence of Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta was present at the swearing-in ceremony. In the administration reshuffle of which his appointment was a part, Sandhu replaced VK Saxena, who has been moved to the Lt Governor position for Ladakh.

The timing of Trump's congratulatory post is notable. At the launch, Sandhu met US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who had previously congratulated Sandhu at his swearing-in and praised his role in building US-India ties.
In a post on X, Sandhu noted: "It was a pleasure to meet US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor at the launch of the Freedom250 celebrations in New Delhi. We had a productive conversation on enhancing American investments in Delhi and expanding India-US technology collaboration."
Trump's post on Truth Social came the following morning, connecting these diplomatic interactions directly to his public recognition of Sandhu's appointment. The US Embassy in India has been visibly active in reinforcing the bilateral relationship, including resharing a Trump quote praising PM Modi: "Our amazing relationship with India will be even stronger going forward. Prime Minister Modi and I are two people that get things done."
What It Means for Delhi Governance
Sandhu's appointment as Lt Governor brings a highly international profile to what is, in constitutional terms, a federally appointed oversight position for the National Capital Territory. Delhi's governance structure is unique — the Lt Governor holds significant powers, particularly over matters relating to police, public order, and services, which have been perennial flashpoints between the elected Delhi government and the LG's office.
Sandhu's diplomatic background suggests a potentially different style from his predecessor. A career diplomat is trained in negotiation, consensus-building, and long-term relationship management — skills that could be useful in the complex, often contentious political environment of Delhi. He was also a BJP candidate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which means his political alignment is known, but his professional identity has been shaped by decades of apolitical service in the Foreign Ministry.
For India's external affairs establishment, having a former Washington ambassador now seated in Delhi's Raj Niwas creates an interesting channel for deepening city-level India-US ties — on technology collaboration, investments, and people-to-people links through the large Indian-American community.
