They Trusted The Bank With Their Gold. Then 96 Packets Vanished!
96 Gold Packets Vanish From UP Bank Locker — Was It Really An Inside Job?
A major banking fraud case has surfaced in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad district after 96 packets of pledged gold allegedly went missing from a Bank of India branch in Bharaul village.
The gold belonged to customers who had pledged their jewellery as security for loans, trusting the bank to keep it safe. The case has now raised serious questions about internal checks, key custody, and the safety of valuables kept under bank control.
How The Scam Came To Light?
The issue came to light when a bank employee suddenly went missing. Dilip Kumar, a staff officer and an important custodian at the Bank of India's Bharaul branch, stopped reporting to work on May 27 without informing anyone.
He did not respond to phone calls or messages, raising concerns among bank officials. Despite several attempts to contact him, the bank received no response.
As his absence continued without any explanation, officials in Agra began to suspect that something was wrong and decided to look into the matter.
Locker Opened, 96 Gold Packets Missing
On June 15, bank officials arranged a duplicate key. They opened the locker in front of a panel advocate, with the entire process recorded on video.
What they found shook everyone present.
- 96 packets of pledged gold loan jewellery were missing.
- The locker showed no sign of forced entry.
- The exact weight and value of the gold remains undisclosed.
- Police suspect the missing gold is worth crores of rupees.
The fact that nothing was broken raises a bigger question: was this an inside job all along?
Three Bank Employees Arrested
The bank's Agra regional chief manager, Aditya Pratap Singh filed an FIR at Araon police station the same night.
Three names now appear in the complaint:
- Sandeep Yadav – former branch manager
- Dilip Kumar – staff officer and key custodian
- Naresh Kumar – credit officer and staff officer
The case has been registered under Section 316(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with criminal breach of trust.
But naming the accused is only step one. Catching them is a different battle.
Investigation Still Underway
Superintendent of Police Aditya Langhe said that police have stepped up the investigation. Teams are conducting raids at several locations to gather evidence and track down the accused.
Araon police station SHO Rishi Kumar said that search operations are underway at multiple places. Police are trying to locate the suspects as well as recover the missing gold.
So far, the accused have not been found, and the search is continuing.
Why This Matters For Customers?
This case is not just about one bank branch in Firozabad. It has raised several important questions for customers who pledge their gold for loans, especially after the disappearance of 96 packets of gold from the bank's locker system.
- How secure are bank lockers?
- Who monitors employees responsible for locker keys?
- And why did a possible fraud come to light only after an employee suddenly went missing?
The incident has highlighted the need for stronger internal monitoring in banks. Until stricter checks are put in place, some customers may continue to have concerns about the safety of the valuables kept in these claimed secure lockers.
