A rock from space could end life on Earth. A meteor scientist says youth can stop it. That's why a meteor scientist urges youth to engage with planetary defence right now. This is real life.
The Threat Is Real
Space may look calm, but it isn't.
- In 2026, scientists are tracking more than 37,000 objects that come close to Earth.
- Over 2,300 of them are considered potentially dangerous asteroids.
The good news?
Unlike earthquakes, floods, or volcanoes, an asteroid impact is the one natural disaster humans can actually prevent.
We've Already Proven It's Possible
The good news is that scientists are taking action.
In 2022, NASA successfully changed the path of an asteroid called Dimorphos by crashing a spacecraft into it — the world's first asteroid deflection test.
The United Nations has declared 2029 as the International Year of Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Defence.
The world is becoming more prepared to protect Earth from asteroid threats.
This Is Where YOU Come In
Youth in space science are the next line of defence. You don't need a spaceship — just passion.
At MIT, 10 undergraduate students are already building real asteroid-tracking systems this semester.
Here's how to start your journey in space safety:
- Study physics, math & astronomy
- Follow NASA & ESA on NEO updates
- Join asteroid awareness campaigns online
- Explore careers in planetary defence
The dinosaurs had no warning. We do. Don't waste it.
