OpenAI Appoints Former Uber India Chief Prabhjeet Singh as India MD

OpenAI has appointed Prabhjeet Singh, former Uber India and South Asia President, as its managing director for India.

OpenAI has named former Uber executive Prabhjeet Singh as its managing director for India, marking one of the company's biggest leadership moves in the country so far. With this appointment, OpenAI India MD Prabhjeet Singh will become the organisation's most senior executive on the ground, signalling how seriously the AI giant is treating the Indian market. Singh will officially join OpenAI in September.

Once he takes over, he will report directly to Kiran Mani, OpenAI's Managing Director for the Asia Pacific region.A Priority Market for OpenAIIndia has become one of OpenAI's fastest-growing markets, and this hire reflects that focus. As OpenAI India MD, Prabhjeet Singh will be responsible for several key areas. These include consumer growth, enterprise adoption, partnerships, regulatory engagement, and overall operations in the country.  

He will also lead efforts to expand OpenAI's presence and support the broader AI ecosystem in India.OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, has been steadily expanding its footprint in India. The country is already the company's second-largest market. It has more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users.

OpenAI has also been strengthening ties with Indian businesses. This includes a recent agreement with Tata Consultancy Services to build AI data centres in the country.From Uber to OpenAIBefore this move, Singh spent more than a decade at Uber. He served as the company's India and South Asia President. In that role, he led Uber's mobility business across India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Uber confirmed his departure last week.Educational BackgroundSingh is an alumnus of two of India's top institutes.

He studied at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
