Eligible OnePlus phones and tablets worldwide will be offered a voluntary move from OxygenOS to ColorOS 17, while older devices outside the upgrade list will keep maintenance support on OxygenOS and users who switch will have a route back, although OnePlus has not yet published the full device list, rollout dates or rollback process.
What the OxygenOS to ColorOS move means?
OnePlus is ending OxygenOS as the main software name for the next Android generation on eligible devices. After ColorOS 17 is released, users with supported OnePlus phones and tablets will be able to install it as an over-the-air update. The company says the move is optional. It also says users who install ColorOS will be able to return to OxygenOS, though the rollback files, supported versions and data rules have not been announced.
The change is important, but it is not a move from Android to a different operating system. ColorOS 17 is OPPO's version of Android 17. Google Play, Android apps and the phone's hardware remain part of the same Android system. The visible changes are expected to involve the software name, interface, settings, system apps, update channel and OPPO services. The exact list cannot be stated until OnePlus and OPPO publish the final ColorOS 17 release notes.
The move also did not begin in 2026. OnePlus and OPPO combined the OxygenOS and ColorOS codebase in 2021. In 2022, OnePlus cancelled a plan to launch one named operating system, but kept both products on the same codebase. The 2026 decision removes that separate branding for eligible devices. In practical terms, many current features already overlap, so the first difference users notice may be the ColorOS name rather than a rebuilt phone experience.
What happened?
On 16 July 2026, OnePlus announced an adjustment to its software strategy. The company said users worldwide with eligible existing OnePlus devices would have the option to move to ColorOS after the official release of ColorOS 17. OnePlus linked the decision to shared software development, update delivery, software quality and the use of OPPO's engineering resources.
The same announcement covered a business change. OnePlus said it would end new product rollouts in Europe and North America. Existing devices in those markets would continue to receive scheduled software updates, security patches, warranty cover and after-sales support within the periods already promised. The US OnePlus community closed on 16 August 2026, according to the company's regional notice.
India is included in the ColorOS transition. OnePlus India has said its local business continues to operate and that software updates, product support, warranty cover and after-sales service remain available. That means two separate facts must not be mixed:
- The switch from OxygenOS to ColorOS 17 applies to eligible devices globally, including India.
- The end of new OnePlus product launches has been confirmed for the US, Canada and Europe, not India.

What the official statement says
OnePlus has confirmed five parts of the plan:
- The update will follow the official release of ColorOS 17. OnePlus has not given a stable rollout date.
- The offer will be global. It covers existing OnePlus devices that fall within the eligible upgrade scope.
- Installation will be voluntary. Users will be given the option to update rather than being moved without a choice.
- A rollback route will be provided. The company has not yet identified which OxygenOS versions will be available for return.
- Older models will not be abandoned at once. Devices outside the ColorOS 17 upgrade scope will continue to receive version maintenance within their existing support periods.
OnePlus also says OPPO will back the support programme and that previously committed software and security periods will be honoured. The official OnePlus operational notice is the main source for the change. The OnePlus US business-adjustment page is the regional notice for North America.
What changes from OxygenOS to ColorOS?
The final ColorOS 17 change list for OnePlus hardware has not been published. The safest way to explain the move is to separate confirmed changes from likely areas of change and unresolved questions.
| Area | OxygenOS position | ColorOS position |
|---|---|---|
| Software name | OxygenOS | ColorOS 17 on eligible devices |
| Android base | OxygenOS 16 uses Android 16 | ColorOS 17 uses Android 17 |
| Update route | OnePlus OxygenOS builds | ColorOS builds adapted for eligible OnePlus hardware |
| Development | Shared OnePlus and OPPO codebase | One named software platform supported by shared engineering resources |
| User choice | Current stable OxygenOS remains available | ColorOS update is voluntary |
| Return option | Not applicable before migration | Rollback to a specified OxygenOS build will be offered |
| Older devices | OxygenOS support depends on the model promise | Models outside the new update list remain on OxygenOS maintenance |
Is ColorOS very different from OxygenOS today?
Less than it was before 2021. OnePlus stated in 2022 that OxygenOS and ColorOS would continue to use the same codebase even though the names and some design choices remained separate. Their current version 16 pages also show several shared features.
| Feature area | OxygenOS 16 | ColorOS 16 | What it shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saved information and assistant tools | Plus Mind and Mind Space | AI Mind Space and Mind Assistant | Both systems organise saved text, images and voice notes |
| Photo editing | AI Portrait Glow and AI Perfect Shot | AI Portrait Glow and other OPPO editing tools | Some image features already share names and functions |
| Private processing | Private Computing Cloud | Private Computing Cloud | Both brands use the same service name for protected cloud processing |
| Computer links | File sharing and screen control with Mac and Windows | O+ Connect, PC Connect and screen mirroring | Both support phone-to-computer work |
| iPhone links | File sharing with iPhone | Phone Connect and Touch to Share | Both are designed to exchange data with Apple devices |
| Animation | Flow Motion and Parallel Processing | Luminous Rendering Engine and Trinity Engine | The product names differ, but both focus on animation and resource use |
The OxygenOS 16 feature page lists Mind Space, AI Portrait Glow, computer and iPhone sharing, Private Computing Cloud and animation changes. The ColorOS 16 page lists matching or related tools. This does not prove that every screen or service is identical. It does show why the ColorOS 17 migration may feel like a continuation of work already done rather than a new system built from the start.

Data and research: What the available numbers show
1. OxygenOS 16 covered at least 19 listed devices
OnePlus's official OxygenOS 16 page names 19 compatible products: 15 phones or foldables and four tablets. The phone list includes the OnePlus 13 series, OnePlus Open, OnePlus 12 series, OnePlus 11 and 11R, OnePlus 10 Pro, Nord 5, Nord 4, Nord 3, Nord CE5, Nord CE4 and Nord CE4 Lite. The tablet list includes OnePlus Pad 3, Pad 2, Pad and Pad Lite.
This is not a ColorOS 17 eligibility list. It is a useful upper starting set, not proof that all 19 products will receive Android 17 or ColorOS 17. Eligibility depends on the Android upgrade promise for each model.
2. OnePlus is still maintaining OxygenOS during the transition
OnePlus announced an OxygenOS B100P01 monthly update with a staged plan beginning on 28 July 2026 and reaching users around 24 August 2026. This shows that OxygenOS support did not stop on the day the ColorOS plan was announced. Monthly fixes can continue while ColorOS 17 is prepared.
3. OPPO's performance figures are vendor tests, not independent results
OPPO reports that ColorOS 16 delivered 40 per cent better tap response in selected apps, 52 per cent better scrolling stability in third-party apps and 37 per cent better overall stability compared with ColorOS 15. It also reports a 13 per cent power-consumption improvement in its test conditions. These figures come from OPPO's laboratory and depend on the test phone, build, app and workload. They should be presented as company claims, not as results guaranteed for a OnePlus phone running ColorOS 17.
4. Android 17 is already released
Google released Android 17 and its source code on 16 June 2026. The system uses API level 37 and includes changes to privacy, security, app memory use, background audio and large-screen app layouts. These are Android 17 changes, not proof of a ColorOS feature. OnePlus must still adapt Android 17 and ColorOS 17 to each supported device.

Practical impact for OnePlus users
If your phone is eligible for ColorOS 17,
you will be able to choose whether to install it. Before accepting the update:
- Read the full device-specific changelog.
- Confirm that banking, work, accessibility and authentication apps support the build.
- Back up photos, messages, files, authenticator recovery codes and app data.
- Check whether OnePlus says the update or rollback will erase data.
- Record the current OxygenOS build number.
- Download rollback files only from a OnePlus or OPPO support page for your exact region and model.
- Wait for early stable-release reports if the phone is your main work or payment device.
If your phone is not eligible
The phone will stay on OxygenOS. That does not mean it will receive new Android versions. It means maintenance continues only until the model's promised end date. Security patches, fault fixes and feature updates are separate categories and may end at different points.
If you are in India
The ColorOS update policy applies to eligible devices in India. OnePlus says its India operations continue, along with warranty and after-sales service. Buyers should still check the written support promise for the exact model. Add an internal link here to OnePlus Phones Keep Getting Costlier: What Happened to the Flagship Killer? for purchase and pricing context.
If you are in the US, Canada or Europe
Existing devices remain covered by the support commitments already made, but new OnePlus product rollouts have ended. Keep invoices, warranty records and service correspondence. Use the support channel listed for your country because the community, store and repair route may change as regional operations are reduced.
If you depend on a OnePlus-only feature
Do not assume that every OxygenOS feature will survive under the same name. Check the device changelog for Alert Slider controls, Open Canvas, gaming tools, camera processing, shelf features, launcher options, call recording rules and cross-device functions. Hardware remains in the phone, but software controls can change.

News4Bharat analysis
The main user issue is not whether ColorOS can run on OnePlus hardware. OnePlus and OPPO have shared a software base for years, and version 16 already contains many matching services. The issue is whether OnePlus publishes a clear transition contract for each model.
That contract needs five items: the eligible-device list, first stable date, support end date, data effect of installation, and data effect of rollback. OnePlus has confirmed the direction but not those details. Until they are published, claims that every active OnePlus phone will receive ColorOS 17 are too broad.
For many users, the first stable ColorOS 17 build may look familiar because OxygenOS 16 already shares features with ColorOS 16. The bigger change is organisational. Future software support is being placed under one OPPO platform while OnePlus reduces product activity in North America and Europe. That can reduce repeated engineering work, but the benefit to users will be measured by update speed, fault rates, patch timing and the number of models supported, not by the name on the update screen.
The voluntary update and rollback promise gives users a choice. It is useful only if OnePlus explains how long OxygenOS maintenance will continue for users who decline ColorOS and whether returning to OxygenOS requires a factory reset. Those are the next facts News4Bharat will track.
What happens next?
Four official announcements are still needed:
- ColorOS 17 launch details: OPPO must publish the stable feature set and release schedule.
- OnePlus eligibility list: OnePlus must name each phone and tablet that can move to ColorOS 17.
- Regional rollout dates: OnePlus must state when India, Europe, North America and other markets receive the update.
- Rollback guidance: OnePlus must publish supported OxygenOS versions, download files, data-loss warnings and service steps.
Android 17 has been available since 16 June 2026, so the next date depends on OPPO and OnePlus rather than Google. As of 18 August 2026, OnePlus has not provided a final public date for the stable ColorOS 17 update on existing global devices.
