Shriram Group has appointed Dr Apoorva Javadekar as its Chief Economist and CEO of Shriram Research, giving him charge of the Group's macroeconomic, financial markets and policy research agenda.

Shriram Group names Apoorva Javadekar as Chief Economist
Dr Apoorva Javadekar is a financial economist whose career spans academia, central-bank-linked research, financial services and capital-market policy.

Shriram Group has appointed Dr Apoorva Javadekar as Chief Economist, Shriram Group, and Chief Executive Officer of Shriram Research, strengthening the financial services conglomerate's focus on economic research, market intelligence and evidence-based policy engagement.

The appointment places Javadekar at the centre of the Group's effort to build a more institutional research function capable of tracking changes in India's economy, financial markets, credit environment and regulatory landscape.

In his new role, Javadekar will lead Shriram Group's macroeconomic and financial markets research agenda while developing Shriram Research as a platform for policy research, market insights and thought leadership.

The move comes at a time when financial institutions are navigating a more complicated economic environment shaped by currency movements, crude-oil volatility, interest rates and changing global capital flows.

News4Bharat recently examined these pressures in its analysis of why the Indian rupee has been under pressure and how the RBI has responded.

Who is Dr Apoorva Javadekar?

Dr Apoorva Javadekar is a financial economist whose career spans academia, central-bank-linked research, financial services and capital-market policy.

He holds a PhD in Economics from Boston University and, before joining Shriram Group, served as Chief Economist at Muthoot FinCorp. As recently as July 2026, Reuters identified Javadekar as Muthoot FinCorp's chief economist while reporting his assessment of the Reserve Bank of India's interest-rate outlook.

Javadekar has also been associated with the Indian School of Business (ISB) as a Professor of Finance. ISB's current finance faculty listing continues to show Apoorva Javadekar among its faculty, marked as “on leave”.

His academic work has covered banking, international finance, asset pricing, mutual funds and financial intermediation. ISB also credits him with previous policy research published through the RBI's Mint Street Memo and with making presentations to the Monetary Policy Committee.

From RBI-Backed CAFRAL to Shriram Research

Before his academic stint at ISB, Javadekar was Research Director at the Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning (CAFRAL) from 2016 to 2019.

CAFRAL works on research in banking, finance and macroeconomics with a particular focus on policy issues and financial-sector capacity building. CAFRAL's official research platform describes its work as covering banking, finance and macroeconomic policy research.

CAFRAL's historical annual report also lists Apoorva Javadekar as a Research Director at the institution.

This background gives Javadekar experience at the intersection of academic research and real-world financial policymaking — an area Shriram Group is seeking to strengthen through Shriram Research.

Javadekar Continues to Have a Role in SEBI's Research Ecosystem

Javadekar has also been involved in securities-market policy research.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India's current Research Advisory Committee roster lists Dr Apoorva Javadekar as a member, identifying him as an ISB faculty member.

SEBI's Research Advisory Committee is tasked with helping define research priorities relevant to the development and regulation of India's capital markets and strengthening the connection between research and policymaking.

That experience is likely to be particularly relevant as Shriram Research expands beyond economic forecasting into areas such as banking, capital markets, asset management and financial-sector policy.

For readers tracking changes at India's major financial and regulatory institutions, News4Bharat has also reported on S Somanath's appointment to the RBI Central Board and the evolving role of policymakers and independent experts in India's financial ecosystem.

Commenting on the appointment, Subhasri Sriram, MD & CEO, Shriram Capital, said:

"As the economic and financial landscape becomes increasingly complex, high-quality research and informed insights are critical to decision-making. Apoorva brings an exceptional blend of academic rigour, policy expertise and industry experience. His leadership will further strengthen the Group's research capabilities, helping us deepen our understanding of evolving economic trends and translate them into actionable insights for our businesses, customers and stakeholders."

Speaking about his new role, Dr. Apoorva Javadekar, Chief Economist, Shriram Group & CEO, Shriram Research, said, "I am delighted to join the Shriram Group, an institution with a long-standing commitment to financial inclusion and nation-building. India stands at a pivotal moment in its economic journey, presenting significant opportunities for innovation, growth and financial deepening. I look forward to building a world-class research platform that combines rigorous analysis, market insights and policy engagement to support the Group's strategic priorities and contribute to the development of India's financial ecosystem."

What Will Shriram Research Do?

Shriram Research is expected to focus on three broad areas: economic and financial-market research, business intelligence and policy engagement.

The platform is intended to generate research that can help Shriram Group's businesses assess domestic and global developments while also contributing to wider public-policy discussions.

Its research agenda is expected to cover areas including:

  • Macroeconomic trends and India's growth outlook
  • Banking and credit markets
  • Capital markets and asset management
  • Household finances and financial inclusion
  • Interest rates and monetary policy
  • Global economic and financial developments
  • Regulatory and financial-sector policy

For Javadekar, the new assignment brings together several strands of his career — academic economics, RBI-linked research, capital-market policy and experience as an economist within a large NBFC.

For Shriram Group, the appointment signals an effort to move research-led decision-making closer to the centre of business strategy as India's financial sector grows in scale and complexity.
