On April 24, 2026, Mercedes-Benz India officially launched the all-new CLA Electric — its most important EV launch in the country so far, and by most accounts, the most capable premium electric sedan to arrive in India at this price point.
The CLA badge has been absent from Indian roads since 2020. It returns now, completely reinvented, as a battery electric vehicle. No combustion engine. No hybrid compromise. Just electric.
The Prices: Where It Starts and Where It Goes
Mercedes-Benz India is offering the CLA EV in three variants:
- CLA 200 Standard Range: ₹55 lakh (ex-showroom)
- CLA 250+ Long Range: ₹59 lakh (ex-showroom)
- CLA 250+ Launch Edition: ₹64 lakh (ex-showroom)
Bookings had already opened on March 10, with a token amount of ₹1.5 lakh. By the time of the launch event, the company reported over 400 confirmed bookings. Deliveries of the CLA 250+ Long Range are expected to begin by end of April 2026.
The CLA EV now becomes the entry point into Mercedes-Benz's India lineup. It replaces the A-Class Limousine, and also retires the EQA and EQB electric SUVs which had been sitting awkwardly in the range.

Two Versions, Two Different Buyers
The CLA 200 Standard Range is powered by a 58kWh battery and has a claimed WLTP range of 542 kilometres. It uses a 224hp rear-mounted motor, reaches 100 kmph in 7.5 seconds.
The CLA 250+ Long Range steps up considerably. An 85kWh NMC battery, claimed WLTP range of 792 kilometres, 272hp, 0-100 kmph in 6.7 seconds.
The Launch Edition adds a matte black exterior, 19-inch alloys, the Superscreen triple-display setup (which is not available on other variants), illuminated door sills, leather upholstery, and edition-specific ambient lighting.

The Technology That Matters
Let's talk about what makes this car genuinely different from anything else at this price in India.
800V Architecture. This is the big one. The CLA supports DC fast charging at up to 320kW. In practical terms, that means roughly 285-325 km of range added in just 10 minutes. A 10-80% DC charge completes in 22 minutes. For context, most EVs in India charge at 50kW or 100kW at best. The CLA is running at a completely different technical level.
Two-Speed Gearbox. Unusual for an EV, but borrowed from the Porsche Taycan approach. Both CLA variants get a two-speed gearbox rather than the standard single-speed reduction. It improves efficiency across the range.
Drag Coefficient of 0.21. This is among the lowest for any production car. The aerodynamics are a big reason why the long-range variant can claim 792 km on the WLTP cycle. In real Indian conditions — heat, traffic, air conditioning — expect 600-700 km per charge.
Frunk. The first Mercedes-Benz in 90 years to have a front boot. It's 101 litres — enough for a cabin-sized trolley bag. The rear boot is 405 litres.
AI and Supercomputers. The CLA runs four onboard supercomputers and multiple AI assistants. The system can predict the best route, show real-time charger availability along your path, and adapt to driving patterns over time. The India-spec does not get the full triple-screen Superscreen setup on standard variants — only the Launch Edition — but a 14-inch central touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital driver's display come standard.

What They've Adapted for India
Mercedes hasn't just shipped the European spec car here. The suspension has been retuned for Indian roads. Ground clearance has been raised. The first drive reviews from Indian journalists note that the car handles potholes and speedbreakers with reasonable composure — it's not a low-slung European sports car struggling at every bump.
There is no sunroof on the CLA EV — replaced by a fixed panoramic glass roof. The spare tyre sits in the boot, which reduces practical boot space when you need it. Worth knowing before you buy.
The CLA competes against the Tesla Model Y (now India-spec), BYD Seal, and Kia EV6. Among German luxury alternatives, the BMW iX1 LWB sits nearby.
Charging Infrastructure: The Honest Part
The range claims are impressive. But India's fast-charging infrastructure is still developing. Mercedes has partnered with multiple Charge Point Operators (CPOs) through its MB.CHARGE Public network — currently aggregating over 9,000 charging points nationwide. Charging station status, location, and payments can be managed through the Mercedes app.
The 800V fast-charging capability is most useful at DC fast chargers of 100kW and above. In major metros — Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad — that infrastructure is improving. On highways, it is still patchy. The honest reality: most CLA EV owners will charge at home overnight, and the 542-792 km range means daily use is entirely practical.
The Design
The CLA's look is unmistakably Mercedes. A sealed front grille with 142 backlit three-pointed stars. Frameless doors. A coupe-like tapering roofline. Flush door handles. AMG-style alloy wheels.
The interior is tech-forward — full-width dashboard panel, illuminated star cluster on the co-driver's side, AMG flat-bottom steering wheel on the 250+ variants, heated and massaged front seats, dual-zone climate control, wireless charger, Burmester sound system.
Six airbags, 360-degree camera, blind spot monitoring, tyre pressure monitoring, auto park assist — safety is well-covered.
Why This Launch Matters Beyond the Car
Mercedes-Benz India sold over 19,000 cars in 2025, making it the largest luxury carmaker in the country. The CLA EV is a signal that the company believes an electric car priced at ₹55 lakh can sell in meaningful volumes in India.
Strong early demand signals a shift in entry-level luxury buying. Younger, first-time luxury car customers are driving much of the interest — buyers who grew up with EVs being aspirational, not alarming.
More models are coming. The GLC EV and C-Class EV are in Mercedes India's electric roadmap. The CLA EV is the first step, but the direction is clear.
