From 'She Begged Me' to 'Focus On Yours' - Story of a Diplomatic Firestorm That Shook the G7
Trump claimed Meloni begged for a G7 photo. She called it fabricated. Italy cancelled a US diplomatic trip. Then both leaders went to war on social media. Here is the full story of how it all unfolded.
Donald Trump and Giorgia Meloni at the center of a diplomatic controversy that generated widespread attention following the G7 summit.
A single photograph at the G7 Summit has triggered one of the biggest diplomatic blow-ups between the United States and a key NATO ally. The Trump Meloni G7 photo controversy began with a throwaway remark in a TV interview and quickly spiralled into a full-scale diplomatic crisis.
US President Donald Trump picked a public fight with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

Trump Drops the Bombshell on Italian TV
It all began at the G7 Summit held in Évian-les-Bains, France on June 16–17, 2026, a meeting of the world's most powerful industrialised nations.

After the summit, Trump gave an interview to Italy's popular TV channel La7. The channel published a dubbed Italian translation of the conversation without playing the original English audio. In it, Trump made a jaw-dropping claim about Meloni. Trump reportedly said: "She's probably happy I talked to her. I didn't have to talk to her. She begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn't have taken it, but I felt sorry for her."
Interestingly, video footage from the G7 summit showed Trump and Meloni sitting side by side on a couch, deep in conversation hardly the image of someone desperately chasing a photo.
Meloni Fires Back - Immediately and Powerfully
Meloni did not stay quiet. She posted a video directly on X (formerly Twitter) and her words were sharp. She called Trump's statements "completely fabricated" and said she was "astounded" that he would say such things about an ally. "I do not know why the president of the United States behaves this way toward his allies - it is certainly not the first time this has happened," she said.
Then came the line that went viral across the world: "There is one thing he must remember: Neither I nor Italy ever beg."

Meloni also took a subtle but stinging dig at Trump's foreign policy, saying it was "a shame he doesn't have the same determination with the enemies of the West… with leaderships with which he instead appears much more accommodating."

Italy's Foreign Minister Cancels His US Trip

Italy's government went into full solidarity mode. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani abruptly cancelled a planned trip to the United States, calling Trump's claims "serious and offensive" toward Meloni and all of Italy. Tajani had been scheduled to fly to the US to attend an Italy-US business forum in Miami, where he was also set to meet with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Italy's Defence Minister Guido Crosetto also posted on X, saying he didn't believe Meloni would ever beg someone for a photo, "not even under threat." He added: "Jokes of this kind do no good to anyone - neither to the USA, nor to Italy, nor to the alliance."
In a phone call with NBC News, Trump doubled down on his claim, saying: "That's true. She wasn't there for us. She was a big fan but I don't want her as a fan because she was not there along with the NATO group having to do with the strait."

Trump's frustration grew from Italy's refusal to back US military operations during the Iran conflict. Earlier in 2026, Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz following joint US and Israeli strikes. The Strait is a strategically critical waterway carrying a significant share of the world's oil supply. Italy chose not to participate or offer support. Trump viewed this as a direct failure of NATO alliance commitments.
Meloni Hits Back Again - This Time in English, on Instagram

Meloni responded to the Truth Social attack directly and this time, she posted in English on Instagram, making sure Trump and the whole world could read it without translation.
She wrote: "These constant unprovoked attacks are senseless. As for my popularity, being your friend certainly has not helped it, nor does it depend on my relationship with you." "My popularity is none of your concern. I suggest you focus on yours."
Why Did This Happen?
The Trump-Meloni relationship had been fraying for months over one core issue - Iran. Relations between the two leaders had frayed over the US war in Iran, which Meloni publicly called illegal. Italy also strongly supports Ukraine, which has been another point of disagreement with Trump's position. Trump's tariffs on European goods and his strong support for Israel's war in Gaza had added to the tension.

The most direct trigger was Italy's refusal to let US military aircraft use Italian airbase facilities during the Iran conflict. Italy reportedly declined permission for US bombers to use a Sicilian airbase without parliamentary approval, a decision Trump viewed as a betrayal by a NATO ally. Once regarded as Trump's staunchest ally in Western Europe, Meloni had even attended Trump's second inauguration in January 2025, the only European leader to do so. The two had bonded over conservative values, strict immigration policies, and national sovereignty. But Iran broke that bond.
Is a Reset Possible?
Despite all. there are small hints that a door remains open. Trump suggested that Meloni "wants to be friends again" following a preliminary US-Iran agreement aimed at reducing regional tensions. Buthis "No thanks!!!" post suggeststhat even if he knows a reconciliation may come, he is not ready to drop his public attacks just yet.
Analysts say the feud has real consequences beyond personal ego, it represents a further fracture between the US and its European allies, coming after tentative signs of repair that had appeared during the very G7 summit where the photo dispute began.
What Italy's Media Said

The reaction in Italy was explosive. One far-right Italian outlet historically closer to Meloni's own political side, ran the front-page headline: "TRUMP È UN COGLIONE" (roughly translated as "Trump is an asshole" or "Trump is an idiot"). That says a lot about how personal and raw the insult felt across the Italian political spectrum.
