Key Takeaways

  • PM Modi left Slovakia for Evian in France to attend the G7 Summit.
  • Slovak PM Robert Fico personally saw off PM Modi in Bratislava.
  • India and Slovakia elevated ties to a Comprehensive Partnership.
  • PM Modi received Slovakia’s highest state honour.
  • Slovakia backed India’s case for a permanent seat at the UNSC.
  • G7 discussions are expected to focus on economic growth, AI and global cooperation.
  • PM Modi is likely to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders on the sidelines.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi left Bratislava on Tuesday afternoon and boarded his flight to Evian in France, where he meet with world leaders at the G7 Summit on June 16 and 17. Just before he drove out, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico walked over to his hotel to see him off himself. That kind of personal send-off rarely shows up on a state itinerary, and it set the tone for how the trip ended.

Where PM Modi is right now?

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the departure on Tuesday. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said Modi had closed a successful Slovakia visit and left for Evian to join the G7 Summit. The MEA framed the big takeaway plainly: India and Slovakia have lifted their relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership.

This is Modi's return to France after the trip began there. France holds the G7 presidency this year, and President Emmanuel Macron had invited Modi back in February, during Macron's own visit to India for the AI Impact Summit. There is a neat symmetry the two leaders keep pointing to: India chairs BRICS in 2026 while France chairs the G7, so both want their summits to talk to each other rather than past each other.

Modi is expected to hold a string of bilateral meetings on the sidelines, including a likely sit-down with US President Donald Trump. The summit agenda runs through economic growth, international cooperation and artificial intelligence, and Modi is going in as the voice carrying the Global South's concerns into a rich-nations room.

PM Modi Honoured with Slovakia's Highest Honour

During his visit, PM Modi was conferred with the Order of the White Double Cross, First Class, Slovakia’s highest state honour, by President Peter Pellegrini.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, this is the 33rd international honour conferred on PM Modi by a foreign government.

Before the award ceremony, PM Modi and President Pellegrini held wide-ranging discussions covering manufacturing, transport, innovation, investment, energy, biofuels and digital technology. PM Modi later said that both sides saw strong potential in expanding cooperation in digital tools and strengthening people-to-people ties.

Modi-Fico Talks Push India-Slovakia Ties Forward

PM Modi also held delegation-level talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. The discussions focused on giving practical shape to the newly announced Comprehensive Partnership.

The two countries reached understandings in several areas, including defence cooperation, counterterrorism, technology, labour mobility and cultural exchange. Slovakia also extended support to India’s case for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council.

India’s high-level delegation reflected the importance New Delhi attached to the visit. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George were part of the talks.

Why PM Modi's France visit matters for India?

For Indian readers, the visit matters for three clear reasons.

First, jobs and manufacturing. The automobile and railway manufacturing talk with Slovakia, plus the labour mobility understanding, point at openings for Indian workers and Indian factories plugged into European supply chains. Slovakia punches above its size in car production, and India wants in on that value chain.

Second, the counterterrorism and UNSC backing. Modi has used this entire European swing to keep cross-border terrorism on the table and to bank goodwill from partner countries. Slovakia's support at the Security Council adds one more vote of confidence to India's long campaign for a bigger seat at the global high table.

Third, the G7 itself. Modi walking into Evian as an invited partner, while India runs BRICS, says a lot about where New Delhi sits in 2026. India is being courted by both blocs at once, and that room to manoeuvre is the real diplomatic capital here.

The trip wraps with the summit. For now, all eyes shift to Evian, and to who Modi shakes hands with on the sidelines.
