UPTET 2026 has begun with nearly 20 lakh candidates set to take the exam.

UPTET 2026 began on July 2 across Uttar Pradesh, with 19.94 lakh candidates registered to appear at 955 examination centres in 60 districts. The three-day exam, being conducted in five shifts till July 4, is one of the biggest eligibility tests in the state’s education sector.

But beyond the massive turnout, the biggest development is a policy shift that could bring relief to thousands of working teachers. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission to conduct a separate TET for in-service teachers, giving them a dedicated opportunity to meet eligibility requirements without competing directly with fresh aspirants in the regular UPTET.

But the biggest update isn't the record turnout. A major decision by the officials could make a big difference for thousands of working teachers.

CM Yogi's Big Move: A Separate Exam For Serving Teachers

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to conduct a separate eligibility test. This test is meant for teachers already working in schools. This means they will no longer have to compete with fresh candidates in the regular UPTET.

The Chief Minister said serving teachers should get enough opportunities to prove their eligibility. He asked officials to create a system that supports them. The move is expected to reduce pressure on the main exam while making the process fairer for in-service teachers.

And this is not the only relief being planned for teachers.

Special Leave And Zero-Tolerance On Cheating

The Uttar Pradesh government has also given special leave to in-service teachers appearing for UPTET 2026. This allows them to take the exam without affecting their school duties.

To ensure a fair exam, the government has put strict security measures in place, including:

  • Zero tolerance for cheating and malpractice.
  • 24×7 monitoring at all exam centres.
  • Proper electricity, drinking water, and sanitation facilities.
  • Full support for transport and accommodation, wherever needed.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the fairness and transparency of the exam must not be compromised. He called a trustworthy exam the government's responsibility towards the state's youth.

Districts With The Highest Number Of Candidates

Some districts are handling the biggest share of UPTET 2026 candidates. Ten districts have the highest number of exam centres and candidates. These include Varanasi, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Gorakhpur, Kanpur Nagar, Meerut, Mau, Moradabad, Agra, and Jaunpur.

Among the busiest cities:

  • Varanasi: 1.27 lakh candidates at 68 exam centres.
  • Prayagraj: 76,634 candidates at 53 centres.
  • Lucknow: 76,720 candidates at 43 centres.

Admit cards are already out. Exam centres are on high alert. Candidates are now waiting for the next big announcement. The government has approved a separate TET for in-service teachers. But UPESSC has not yet announced when the new exam will be introduced.

News4Bharat POV

For Uttar Pradesh, UPTET 2026 is more than a recruitment-linked eligibility test. It is a credibility test for the state’s examination system and a policy test for how fairly it treats both fresh aspirants and teachers already serving in schools. With nearly 20 lakh candidates, strict surveillance and a proposed separate TET for in-service teachers, the exam has become a major moment for UP’s education sector.
