From Japan to India: The 28-Year Journey Behind IFFCO-TOKIO's New CEO

The Tokio Marine veteran brings 28 years of cross-border insurance experience spanning underwriting, risk management, strategy and operations, taking the helm as IFFCO-TOKIO accelerates AI adoption, rural expansion and profitable growth.

Tatsuya Fujimoto Named IFFCO-TOKIO MD & CEO: Why His Appointment Matters

IFFCO-TOKIO General Insurance Company Limited has appointed Tatsuya Fujimoto as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership transition at the general insurer. Fujimoto succeeds Subrata Mondal, who had been leading the company since September 2024.

The appointment is more than a conventional change at the top. Fujimoto moves into the CEO's office at a time when IFFCO-TOKIO is targeting ₹11,000 crore in Gross Written Premium (GWP) in FY2026-27, sharpening its focus on profitable motor segments, health insurance, commercial lines, SMEs, rural markets and smaller towns. The company has projected growth of about 17.9% in profitable segments and geographies for the current financial year.

That growth agenda makes Fujimoto's combination of underwriting discipline, risk expertise, operational management and international strategy particularly relevant to IFFCO-TOKIO's next phase.

From risk chief to the CEO's office

Fujimoto is a 28-year veteran of the Tokio Marine Group, having worked across Japan, the United States, Malaysia and India. He began his career with the group in its sales function in July 1998 and has since handled areas ranging from commercial, personal and corporate underwriting to reinsurance, corporate planning, marketing, customer analytics, risk management and business transformation.

Of his nearly three decades with the group, Fujimoto spent around 18 years in Japan, where his assignments included marketing and corporate planning as well as serving as Executive Secretary to the Group CEO. His international career subsequently took him into several strategically important roles across the Tokio Marine network.

His overseas leadership experience has included roles such as General Manager in Tokio Marine's Malaysia operations, Senior Vice President at Tokio Marine America in New York, and Deputy CEO of First Insurance Company of Hawaii (FICOH).

His India journey: risk first, operations next

Fujimoto's elevation also represents continuity rather than an external leadership reset.

He joined IFFCO-TOKIO as Senior Executive Director and Chief Risk Officer effective November 1, 2024, according to the company's regulatory disclosures.

In June 2025, he was redesignated Director (Operations)-Designate, before taking charge as the company's Whole-Time Director/Director (Operations) from August 1, 2025.

IFFCO-TOKIO's FY2025-26 annual report subsequently listed Fujimoto as Director (Operations), placing him at the heart of the company's operating management before his elevation to the top job.

That progression—Chief Risk Officer → Director of Operations → MD & CEO—stands out because it gives Fujimoto direct exposure to the two areas likely to determine profitability in general insurance: how risk is selected and priced, and how efficiently that business is subsequently serviced.

Fujimoto takes over after IFFCO-TOKIO returns to premium growth

The leadership transition comes after IFFCO-TOKIO recorded a noticeable rebound in premium growth during FY2025-26.

The insurer reported Gross Written Premium of ₹9,334 crore, up about 10% from ₹8,507 crore in FY2024-25. Net premium increased to ₹6,147 crore from ₹5,773 crore. The company's share of India's general insurance market stood at approximately 2.7%.

Profitability, however, remained an area requiring close attention. Profit before tax declined to ₹152 crore from ₹178 crore, while profit after tax fell to ₹115 crore from ₹135 crore. The insurer also reported an underwriting loss of around ₹1,217 crore for FY2025-26, compared with ₹1,114 crore in the preceding year.

At the same time, its balance-sheet position remained comfortably above the regulatory floor, with a solvency ratio of 1.91 as of March 31, 2026, against the regulatory requirement of 1.50.

The other big mandate: turning IFFCO-TOKIO into an AI-driven insurer

Another development that makes this leadership change more consequential is the insurer's accelerating technology programme.

IFFCO-TOKIO said in its latest annual report that it is moving from foundational digitalisation towards becoming a more sophisticated AI-driven enterprise. Its initiatives include AI-based health claims processing, which automatically scans, digitises and validates documents, and an internally developed Motor Own Damage Image AI solution designed to identify duplicate images and minimise claim leakage.

The company is also using AI for CKYC data extraction and Aadhaar masking, while strengthening cybersecurity and migrating parts of its technology infrastructure to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure. More significantly, it has initiated a Core Insurance System Replacement Project, aimed at replacing legacy policy-administration infrastructure with a more scalable and modular platform.

A leadership profile built across four markets

Fujimoto holds a bachelor's degree in Economics from Keio University in Japan, has studied at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) credential.

His appointment therefore brings together four distinct strands of experience—Japanese insurance discipline, American market exposure, Southeast Asian operations and direct knowledge of India's insurance ecosystem.

For IFFCO-TOKIO, that could prove particularly important as the insurer seeks to move simultaneously on several fronts: growing premium, improving underwriting economics, expanding into underserved markets, modernising core technology and using AI more extensively in insurance operations.

Rather than beginning with a lengthy familiarisation period, Fujimoto enters the role having already worked inside the company's risk and operations functions. That may ultimately be the most consequential aspect of the appointment.
