ICICI Life Insurance Limited, until recently known as ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Limited, has announced a significant leadership transition, appointing Sidharatha Mishra as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) for a five-year term.
The Board approved Mishra's appointment as Chief Operating Officer from October 6, 2026, followed by his appointment as Additional Director and MD & CEO from October 14, 2026, or the date on which approval is received from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), whichever is later. The appointment remains subject to the requisite regulatory and corporate approvals.
Mishra will succeed Anup Bagchi, whose resignation as MD & CEO will become effective at the close of business on October 13. Bagchi is moving to HDFC Bank, where he has been approved as the lender's new MD & CEO for a three-year term beginning October 27, 2026.
The appointment goes beyond a routine change at the top. It comes as ICICI Life simultaneously navigates a new corporate identity, strong growth in its protection business, increasing use of technology and artificial intelligence, changes in its ownership structure, and potentially far-reaching reforms in India's insurance distribution framework.
Sidharatha Mishra to move from ICICI Bank to ICICI Life
The transition has been structured in stages.
Mishra will be relieved of his existing responsibilities at ICICI Bank at the close of business on October 5 and will consequently cease to be a Senior Management Personnel of the bank. He will move to ICICI Life as COO from October 6, creating a short transition window before Bagchi formally steps down on October 13. Mishra is then scheduled to assume the MD & CEO position from October 14, subject to IRDAI approval.
The staggered handover is significant for an insurer of ICICI Life's scale, allowing the incoming chief to enter the organisation before formally taking over the top executive position.
His tenure as MD & CEO has been approved for five consecutive years, making the appointment an important long-term leadership decision rather than an interim succession arrangement.
Who is Sidharatha Mishra?
Sidharatha Mishra brings more than 26 years of banking experience, with much of his career spent within the ICICI ecosystem.
At ICICI Bank, Mishra currently heads a wide portfolio spanning digital channels and partnerships, voice channel, customer service, NRI business and IFIG operations. His experience therefore cuts across retail banking, customer acquisition and servicing, partnerships and increasingly important digital distribution channels.
Mishra joined ICICI Bank as a management trainee in 1998 and subsequently worked across branch banking and regional and zonal retail operations. His career included assignments covering West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana before he became retail business head for East and Andhra Pradesh in 2018. Since July 2024, his responsibilities have expanded across digital channels and several customer-facing businesses.
Academically, Mishra holds a Bachelor's degree in Science and a postgraduate diploma in management with a specialisation in finance from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar.
The combination of physical retail distribution experience and digital-channel leadership is particularly relevant as life insurers increasingly attempt to balance traditional agency and bancassurance networks with direct, partnership-led and technology-enabled customer acquisition.

Why Sidharatha Mishra's appointment matters for ICICI Life
The choice of Mishra offers an indication of the capabilities ICICI Life may consider increasingly important in its next phase: digital distribution, customer experience, operating efficiency and partnership management.
In Q1 FY2027, the insurer's Annualised Premium Equivalent channel mix comprised approximately 22% agency, 13% direct, 27% bancassurance, 15% partnership distribution and 23% group business.
That diversified channel structure means managing the relationship between traditional distribution and digital channels will remain central to the business.
Mishra's experience overseeing digital channels, partnerships and customer service at ICICI Bank places him directly at the intersection of those priorities.
It will also be relevant as insurers use technology not simply for online sales but for underwriting, customer onboarding, policy servicing, claims processing, partner productivity and cost management.
ICICI Life enters new leadership phase with strong Q1 FY2027 numbers
Mishra will inherit a company that reported strong headline growth in the first quarter of FY2027.
For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, ICICI Life reported profit after tax of ₹386 crore, up 27.8% year-on-year. Its Value of New Business increased 24.9% to ₹571 crore, while the VNB margin expanded to 26.7% from 24.5% a year earlier.
New business received premium grew 21.3% to ₹4,866 crore, while Annualised Premium Equivalent rose 14.6% to ₹2,136 crore.
One of the more notable developments was in protection. Overall protection APE expanded 45.7%, while retail protection APE surged 60.4% year-on-year to ₹223 crore. Retail new-business sum assured increased 45.9% to ₹1.13 lakh crore.
The insurer also reported a 99.3% claim settlement ratio in Q1 FY2027, with an average turnaround time of one day for non-investigated individual death claims. During the quarter, it settled ₹1,306 crore of death claims and paid ₹3,360 crore in maturity and survival benefits.
Its assets under management stood at approximately ₹3.34 lakh crore as of June 30, 2026, while its solvency ratio was 225.4%, comfortably above the regulatory requirement of 150%.
Those figures mean the new CEO's immediate task is not simply repairing a weak franchise. Instead, he will be responsible for sustaining profitable growth while adapting the insurer's distribution economics, product mix and technology architecture to a changing market.

Anup Bagchi's exit triggers succession at ICICI Life
Mishra's elevation follows Anup Bagchi's decision to leave the insurer after HDFC Bank selected him as its next MD & CEO.
Bagchi's resignation from ICICI Life will take effect after business hours on October 13. The insurer's board placed on record its appreciation for his contribution to the ICICI Group over nearly three decades and his role in steering the life insurance company.
HDFC Bank, meanwhile, has received RBI approval for Bagchi to become its MD & CEO for three years beginning October 27, 2026. He will succeed Sashidhar Jagdishan, whose tenure ends on October 26.
The distinction in dates is important: Bagchi leaves ICICI Life on October 13, while his tenure as HDFC Bank MD & CEO starts on October 27.
What comes next for ICICI Life?
The first milestone will be Mishra's movement from ICICI Bank to ICICI Life on October 6. The second will be the completion of Bagchi's tenure on October 13, followed by Mishra's elevation to MD & CEO from October 14 or when IRDAI approval is received, whichever occurs later.
October 13 is important for another reason. ICICI Life has already informed the exchanges that its board is scheduled to meet on that date to consider its unaudited financial results for the half-year ended September 30, 2026.
Those H1 FY2027 numbers will provide an early indication of the operating position Mishra inherits.
Investors also did not get an immediate trading-day reaction to the October 2 appointment announcement because both the NSE and BSE were closed for Gandhi Jayanti. Regular equity trading is scheduled to resume on Monday, October 5.
