Key Highlights:

  • India has launched E85 fuel at select petrol pumps, starting with 48 public-sector OMC retail outlets.
  • E85 contains around 80–85% ethanol and is meant only for flex-fuel vehicles, not regular petrol cars or bikes.
  • The fuel is expected to be nearly ₹20 per litre cheaper than E20 petrol, but mileage may be lower due to ethanol’s lower energy density.
  • Hero Splendor+ Flex Fuel, Hero HF Deluxe Flex Fuel and Suzuki Gixxer SF 250 Flex Fuel are among the early E85-compatible two-wheelers.
  • The government plans to expand E85 availability to 500 outlets by December 2026 and about 5,000 outlets by December 2027.

India’s shift towards cleaner mobility has entered a new phase with the launch of E85 fuel at select petrol pumps. Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri launched E85 fuel at an IndianOil retail outlet in New Delhi on World Environment Day 2026.

But for most car and bike owners, the immediate question is simple: can my vehicle run on E85? The answer is no — unless it is specifically designed as a flex-fuel vehicle. Regular petrol and E20-compatible vehicles should not be filled with E85, as the fuel contains a much higher ethanol concentration and requires special engine calibration, fuel-system components and sensors.

The big question for every car and bike owner right now is simple: can my vehicle run on this new fuel?

The answer to this is that not every petrol vehicle can. E85 fuel is intended only for use in flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), where the engine is calibrated to handle the higher level of ethanol in the fuel. If you own a regular petrol car or bike, this fuel is not for you at least not yet.

What Exactly Is E85 Fuel?

E85 is a high-ethanol blended fuel comprising 80–85 per cent ethanol and 14–19 per cent petrol, specifically designed for use in flex-fuel vehicles. Think of it as a cleaner, more environment-friendly version of the petrol we use today, but with a much higher ethanol content.

With E20 petrol currently at ₹102.12 per litre in Delhi, E85 enters the market at a nearly ₹20 discount compared to the regular E20 blend. That is a significant saving at the pump, especially for daily commuters.

How Many Pumps Have E85 Fuel in India?

The rollout has commenced across 48 Public Sector OMC retail outlets in the country. The government plans to scale this up to 500 outlets by December 2026, and around 5,000 outlets by December 2027. So right now, E85 pumps are limited, but the network is set to grow rapidly.

Which Motorcycles Are Compatible?

This is where it gets interesting for two-wheeler buyers. A handful of bikes are already on sale that can run on E85.

Hero Splendor+ Flex Fuel

India's best-selling motorcycle, the Hero Splendor Plus, is now available in a flex-fuel avatar capable of running on ethanol blends up to E85. It is priced at ₹82,810 (ex-showroom) and Hero claims power has increased by 7% while torque is up by 3%. The bike is expected to deliver around 70–72 km/l. 91 Wheels

Hero HF Deluxe Flex Fuel

The HF Deluxe Flex Fuel is priced at ₹72,792 (ex-showroom Delhi) and is powered by the same 97.2cc engine with a revised ECU and upgraded fuel system, compatible with blends from E20 to E85. It is a more affordable option for budget-conscious buyers.

Both Hero bikes command a premium of around ₹6,000 over their standard counterparts and go on sale in Delhi and select Maharashtra regions from July 2026.

The Suzuki Gixxer flex-fuel variant is powered by a 250cc engine producing 27.9 PS of power and 22.5 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed gearbox. It is compatible with E85 fuel and is priced at ₹1.98 lakh (ex-showroom), making it the most expensive flex-fuel motorcycle currently on sale in India.

Which Cars Are Compatible for E85 Fuel?

The car options are still very limited right now.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex Fuel

Maruti Suzuki has become the first carmaker in India to begin production of flex-fuel cars with the Wagon R. The car is powered by the 1.2-litre petrol engine and has been homologated to run on E85 fuel, with upgraded fuel injectors, fuel pumps, new fuel lines, a newly calibrated ECU, and an ethanol sensor. However, currently the car is only available for the commercial sector. Private buyers will have to wait a little longer.

Several other carmakers including Toyota, Hyundai and Tata have showcased flex-fuel prototypes in India, and with E85 fuel dispensing stations being established across the nation, more carmakers could join the flex-fuel segment in the coming months.

What About E20 Cars - Are They Safe?

Since E20 became the standard fuel across the country, there has not been a single reported case of engine failure or vehicle breakdown attributable to ethanol blending. E20-compatible vehicles also deliver improved acceleration and better ride quality, particularly under city driving conditions. Additionally, the use of E20 fuel has no impact on the validity of vehicle insurance in India.

So if you own a regular petrol car that is E20-compatible, you have nothing to worry about. Just do not use E85 in it.

Why Does E85 Fuel Matters?

Flex-fuel vehicles operating on E85 can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by around 61 per cent compared to conventional petrol vehicles. Higher ethanol blends also result in near-zero particulate matter emissions, contributing to improved urban air quality.

On the economic side, if 50 per cent of new two-wheelers and four-wheelers transition to flex-fuel vehicles, it could generate demand for over 312 crore litres of ethanol, result in nearly ₹12,403 crore flowing directly to farmers, and lead to annual foreign exchange savings of nearly ₹15,151 crore.

One Thing to Keep in Mind

Flex-fuel vehicles running on E85 can be expected to return roughly 25–35 per cent lower mileage than an equivalent E20 vehicle, owing to ethanol's lower energy density compared to petrol. So while the fuel is cheaper per litre, you may end up filling up more often. It is something buyers should factor in before making a decision.
