However, the introduction of advanced generative artificial intelligence brings complex economic realities to light. The Anthropic Economic Index shows India is the second-largest market for Claude AI. The country drives 5.8% of total global traffic, placing it right behind the United States.

While this headline metric projects an image of an exploding digital powerhouse, adjusting that volume for the size of the working-age population reveals an entirely different picture. On a per-capita basis, India ranks near the bottom globally—standing at 101st out of 116 countries. This stark paradox underscores a defining truth about modern technological uptake: high aggregate usage is driven fundamentally by India's sheer population scale rather than deep, widespread penetration among the average citizen.

These gaps show why AI tools remain a luxury. Paid plans, fast internet, and modern computers cost too much for an average earner. This creates a high financial barrier in India compared to wealthier markets. Without targeting structural hurdles related to income, digital infrastructure, and vernacular awareness, AI adoption will remain confined to specialized enclaves.
