OnePlus Mind Space in OxygenOS 16 can save screenshots, documents, voice notes and other information, let users search that material in natural language, and allow Google Gemini to use saved content for tasks such as trip planning, summaries and recommendations. But the feature has limits, device requirements and privacy settings that users need to understand.
For years, smartphones have been good at storing information and bad at helping users find it again.
A train ticket may be buried in a screenshot. A restaurant recommendation may be sitting inside a saved image. A work deadline may be hidden in a message. A travel idea might exist as a voice note recorded weeks earlier.
OnePlus is trying to change that with Mind Space in OxygenOS 16, combined with Google Gemini integration and natural-language search.
The idea is simple. Instead of treating screenshots, notes, documents and saved information as separate files, Mind Space turns them into a searchable collection that Gemini can use as context.
That means a user could save a train ticket and later ask, “What is my seat number for tomorrow?” They could collect hotel screenshots, restaurant ideas and travel notes, then ask Gemini to build a five-day itinerary based on that material.
Google now documents these examples directly in its Gemini support pages.
This is why describing Mind Space as a form of AI memory for a OnePlus phone is useful, even though “AI memory” is not OnePlus’ official name for the feature.
The more important question is what it can actually do today.
What is OnePlus Mind Space?
Mind Space is a feature in OxygenOS 16 designed to collect information that a user wants to return to later.
OnePlus describes it as a place where users can save schedules, ideas, information and other content. On supported phones with a Plus Key, users can press the key to save content or long-press it to record a voice memo of up to 60 seconds.
The saved information can then be revisited inside Mind Space.
OnePlus also provides a Mind Assistant that lets users search saved information using conversational queries rather than manually finding individual files or screenshots.
On its official OxygenOS 16 page, OnePlus describes the process as being able to “ask naturally” and search Mind Space through the Mind Assistant.

How Mind Space works with Google Gemini
The biggest change is not simply that OnePlus can save information.
It is that Gemini can use information stored inside Mind Space when responding to a request.
Google’s Gemini documentation says the mobile app can work with saved Mind Space content including:
- documents
- screenshots
- voice notes
- other saved information
Gemini can use that material to recall specific details, summarise saved content, plan an itinerary and make recommendations based on a user’s saved interests.
That turns Mind Space from a storage feature into a source of personal context.
For example, Google gives prompts similar to:
- “What is the seat number for my train ticket tomorrow?”
- “Where did I park this afternoon?”
- “Help me create a five-day Paris trip using content from my Mind Space.”
- “Create a one-page study guide from the material I saved.”
These are important examples because they show what the integration is designed to solve.
Gemini is not simply searching the web. It can use information the user chose to save on the phone.
Mind Space vs Gemini: what each part does
The difference between Mind Space and Gemini can be understood this way.
| Feature | Main role |
|---|---|
| Mind Space | Saves and organises information selected by the user |
| Mind Assistant | Lets users search Mind Space using natural language |
| OnePlus AI Search | Searches across sources including Mind Space, Files, Notes and Settings |
| Google Gemini | Uses Mind Space content as context for answers, summaries, recommendations and planning |
| Gemini Connected Apps | Allows Gemini to work with supported apps and services with user permission |

This distinction matters.
Mind Space does not replace Gemini. Gemini does not automatically become the storage system.
Mind Space collects the information. Gemini can reason over that collection when the integration is available and enabled.
What can you actually ask Gemini to do with Mind Space?
Google currently lists several practical uses.
1. Find information you saved earlier
A user can ask Gemini to retrieve a detail from saved material.
Google gives the example of finding a train seat number from a ticket.
Another example involves retrieving a restaurant phone number saved previously.
This may be one of the most useful functions because it solves a common smartphone problem: information exists on the device, but the user cannot remember where it was saved.
2. Use screenshots as context
Screenshots have become a form of personal bookmarking.
People screenshot recipes, flight tickets, event details, products, maps, social posts, hotel listings and conversations.
Mind Space can make these saved items more useful by allowing Gemini to reference their contents later.
That means the screenshot stops being only an image inside a gallery.
It becomes searchable context.
3. Use voice notes as memory
Google also documents voice notes as a supported Mind Space content type.
OnePlus says phones equipped with the Plus Key can record a voice memo of up to 60 seconds into Mind Space by holding the key.
A user could therefore record something like:
“Car is parked in B2, spot 147.”
Later, Gemini could be asked where the car was parked. This is a small example, but it explains the concept well. The phone is being used as an external memory layer.
4. Build a trip from saved ideas
Travel planning is one of the use cases OnePlus itself highlights.
The company says users can capture travel inspiration inside Mind Space and then ask Gemini to help create a plan around factors such as pace, budget and travel style.
Google also provides a five-day Paris itinerary as an example of what Gemini can generate using Mind Space content.
A user could theoretically save information about:
- hotels
- restaurants
- attractions
- train schedules
- flight details
- cafes
- shopping locations
- budget notes
Gemini could then use those saved items while building the itinerary.
5. Turn saved work material into a summary
Google says Gemini can summarise Mind Space content for a project.
That makes the feature relevant beyond travel.
A user could save meeting screenshots, documents, notes or research material and later request a summary or study guide.
OnePlus also presents productivity as one of the main uses of Mind Space with Gemini, saying saved schedules and tasks can be used to support work-related requests.

Can Gemini take actions after using Mind Space?
To a degree, yes, but this needs clarification.
Google Gemini supports Connected Apps that can perform tasks across compatible services. Google says Gemini Connected Apps can, depending on permissions and supported integrations, help create calendar events, work with productivity apps, send messages, make calls, play media and perform certain device actions.
Mind Space itself has narrower permissions.
Google specifically says the Mind Space connection in Gemini cannot currently:
- store or add new information to Mind Space
- create folders
- manage or delete folders
- add note tags
- invite people to shared notes or content
This is an important limit.
Gemini can read and use saved Mind Space information when permitted, but that does not mean Gemini has unrestricted control over the Mind Space database.
Which phones support Mind Space with Gemini?
Google’s current support documentation lists the following supported phones for the Mind Space connected app:
- OnePlus 13s
- OnePlus 15
- OnePlus 15R
- OPPO Find X9
- OPPO Find X9 Pro
The device must run Android 16 or later.
The integration is currently listed for the Gemini mobile app rather than Gemini on the web or Gemini inside Google Messages.
Availability can still vary by device, market, language and software rollout.
OnePlus also states that availability of Plus Mind AI varies by country, region and device.
The OnePlus 16 connection
The timing matters because OnePlus is also preparing its next hardware cycle.
News4Bharat reported on October 1 that the OnePlus 16 had been confirmed for an October 12, 2026 China debut, while an India release date had not been confirmed at the time of publication.

Why smartphone companies are putting more AI into the operating system
OnePlus is not developing Mind Space in isolation.
AI features are becoming a larger part of the smartphone market.
Counterpoint Research estimated in June 2026 that GenAI-capable smartphones could account for 45% of global smartphone shipments in 2026, up from 36% in 2025.
It expects the share to reach 52% in 2027.
Counterpoint had earlier reported that cumulative GenAI smartphone shipments passed 500 million units in the third quarter of 2025, while more than 250 million existing smartphone users had received software updates providing at least some generative AI functions.
The research firm also found that writing-related tasks were among the leading GenAI smartphone use cases.
There is, however, a wider market problem.
Counterpoint separately forecast that GenAI-capable phones would continue gaining share even as total smartphone shipments fell, reflecting how manufacturers are increasingly using software and AI features to differentiate phones in a difficult hardware market.
This helps explain why features such as OnePlus Mind Space, Gemini integration, AI Search, Apple Intelligence, Galaxy AI and Google's Pixel AI tools are becoming central to smartphone software strategies.
For Google specifically, Gemini is becoming a larger part of Android.
