Washington D.C. witnessed moments of sheer panic late Saturday night when a heavily armed man attempted to breach security at the prestigious White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, where former US President Donald Trump was present along with top political leaders, journalists, and dignitaries.
What began as an evening celebrating journalism quickly turned into chaos.
According to initial reports, a 31-year-old man — identified as Cole Tomas Allen from California — rushed toward the ballroom area of the Washington Hilton armed with both a firearm and knives.

Eyewitnesses say the sound of what appeared to be 5–8 gunshots sent shockwaves through the venue. Inside the packed ballroom, guests ducked under tables, some calling loved ones, others scrambling for cover as fear spread within seconds.
Secret Service acts swiftly
Security forces, including the elite U.S. Secret Service counterassault team, reacted immediately. The attacker was intercepted and tackled before he could reach the main event area.
One officer was hit but saved by a bullet-resistant vest and is now reported to be stable.
Former President Trump, who had just begun addressing the gathering, was quickly shielded and escorted off stage. Vice President JD Vance was evacuated moments earlier as a precaution.

Inside: fear, confusion, disbelief
Attendees described the moment as “surreal.” Plates were left untouched, chairs overturned, and the hum of conversation replaced by shouts of “duck” and “get down.”
Some guests initially mistook the sound for falling trays — until security personnel rushed in with weapons drawn.
In a striking moment, chants of “God Bless America” reportedly broke out as security moved the president to safety.
Trump reacts
Roughly two hours after the incident, Trump addressed the media back at the White House, still in his formal attire.
“When you’re impactful, they go after you… they believe he was a lone wolf,” he said, confirming he was unharmed.
He also suggested rescheduling the event within a month, though questions over security lapses have already begun to surface.

Investigation underway
Authorities, including the FBI under Director Kash Patel, are now examining recovered weapons, shell casings, and surveillance footage. The suspect is in custody and expected to be produced in court.
Preliminary findings indicate he acted alone, but his motive — and intended target — remain unclear.
A worrying pattern
This marks the third security scare involving Trump since 2024, including the assassination attempt in Pennsylvania that left him injured and a civilian dead.
The larger concern
The incident has raised serious concerns about how an armed individual managed to get so close to a high-security event attended by the country’s top leadership.
Security across federal events is now expected to be tightened significantly in the coming days.
