A deeply disturbing sexual exploitation scandal has surfaced in Maharashtra's Amravati district, specifically in the towns of Paratwada and Achalpur, about 180 km from Nagpur. The prime accused — identified as Mohammad Ayaz Tanveer Ahmed, also known as Ayan Ahmed, aged 19 — has been arrested and remanded to police custody until April 21, 2026, by a local court. Paratwada police took him into custody following a complaint filed by Rajya Sabha MP Anil Bonde.

The scale of what investigators are now uncovering is alarming. Police have confirmed that at least 180 girls, a significant number of them minors aged 15 to 17, were exploited. Over 350 obscene videos were created and subsequently circulated on WhatsApp and Snapchat, triggering panic across several communities in the region. When these videos began circulating widely in mid-April, families discovered their daughters had been victimised — many for months — without ever coming forward because of fear and social stigma.

HOW IT WORKED: THE MODUS OPERANDI

According to police sources, the accused used a calculated and patient approach. He would approach minor girls on social media, initiating friendly conversations and gradually building trust. Once he had established emotional proximity — sometimes presenting himself as a romantic partner — he allegedly lured victims into private meetings. At these meetings, he recorded explicit videos without the girls' knowledge or consent. These recordings were then used as blackmail tools: share more content, meet again, or the videos would be made public.

  • Ayaz reportedly enrolled in major medical coaching centres in Amravati, including Future Hunt and Aakash, specifically to access a pool of students from different schools at cultural events.
  • Some victims were allegedly taken to cities like Mumbai and Pune, which suggests the network extended beyond Amravati and potentially involves associates in other cities.
  • A second accused, Uzer Khan Iqbal Khan, has also been arrested. He allegedly downloaded videos from Ayaz's phone and spread them across social media platforms, directly amplifying the crime's reach.
  • In total, six accused have been arrested. Others named include Mohammad Shahad, Iqbal, Tabrez, and Faiz Saber Khan — all from the Achalpur locality.
  • A seventh accused, identified as Mohammad Joyan, remains absconding. Locating him is described by investigators as critical to understanding the full scope of the racket.

LEGAL ACTION SO FAR

Charges have been filed under Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, along with provisions of the POCSO Act (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) and the Information Technology Act, 2000. POCSO carries mandatory minimum sentences and is non-bailable for offences against minors. The accused's mobile phone has been seized, and forensic teams are working to retrieve deleted data, which could significantly expand the evidence base and reveal additional victims.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to handle the investigation. Amravati Rural Superintendent of Police Vishal Anand Singuri is personally overseeing the probe. A dedicated female investigation officer has been assigned to interact with victims, and the SP has publicly appealed to victims to come forward: "We will maintain confidentiality and identities will be protected. The complainants will only have to meet two persons — a lady investigation officer and a judge for recording of statements."

POLITICAL AND SOCIAL FALLOUT

The scandal has set off a fierce political reaction in Maharashtra. Rajya Sabha MP Anil Bonde (BJP) stated publicly: "There are around 180 victims, the majority Hindus. Some victims are Muslims. Some of the victims are minors." He lodged the formal complaint that initiated the police action. Opposition parties and women's rights groups have demanded swift action and systemic reforms in how crimes against minors are tracked online.

The house of the prime accused was razed by authorities in Paratwada, a decision that has itself attracted commentary from legal experts who argue demolitions without due process set a troubling precedent, regardless of how heinous the alleged crimes are.

WHY THIS CASE MATTERS BEYOND AMRAVATI

This is not purely a local story. The Amravati scandal reflects a broader, national crisis: the overlap of unchecked social media use among minors, inadequate digital literacy, and the absence of proactive cyber-crime monitoring in semi-urban and rural India. Coaching institutes — which are largely unregulated environments where students from multiple schools converge — created the social access that the accused allegedly exploited. Parents, school administrators, and local authorities were not equipped to detect what was happening until hundreds of videos were already circulating.
