A decade ago, solar power in India was still treated by many as a side chapter in the country’s energy journey. Today, it sits at the centre of that story. Solar capacity has risen from just 2.82 GW in 2014 to 143.6 GW by the end of February 2026, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. That is not just growth. PM Surya Ghar changed the conversation
The rooftop solar push under PM Surya Ghar is perhaps the most visible face of India’s solar policy. The scheme aims to reach one crore households by FY 2026-27, with an outlay of ₹75,021 crore. The 2026-27 Union Budget allocated ₹22,000 crore for the scheme, up from the previous year, showing that the Centre wants to keep the momentum alive.
By December 2025, more than 26 lakh households had benefited and ₹14,771 crore in central financial assistance had been disbursed. Another official update in March 2026 reiterated that the scheme remains central to the country’s residential solar drive.
In states like Uttar Pradesh, the impact is already visible. UP recorded 52,729 rooftop installations in March 2026 alone — the highest monthly figure by any state since the scheme began. The state reportedly crossed 4.48 lakh cumulative installations and around 1,524.61 MW of installed capacity under the programme, with significant savings for consumers.
This is where solar becomes more than an energy policy. It becomes kitchen economics. Lower monthly bills. Less anxiety over tariff hikes. A tangible sense that a government scheme can change household expenditure.

Even more significantly, India’s total installed generation capacity touched 524 GW by 28 February 2026, and the government has already said that non-fossil-fuel-based capacity crossed the 50 percent mark of installed capacity in 2025 — five years ahead of its original 2030 target.

Ember’s 2026 analysis said solar accounted for about 9 percent of India’s electricity generation in 2025, up from roughly 0.5 percent a decade earlier. That pace tells its own story: India is not entering the solar era slowly; it is racing into it.
