Why This Partnership Matters for Rural West Bengal?
For many families in rural and semi-urban areas, access to structured life insurance and financial planning products remains limited. Banks, especially Regional Rural Banks, play a critical role in building trust and financial awareness among local communities.
- Strong Rural Banking Reach: West Bengal Gramin Bank has built a strong presence across the state by serving rural households, small businesses, farmers, and semi-urban customers. Its 960 branches give Canara HSBC Life Insurance a wider platform to reach customers who may not have easy access to standalone insurance channels.
- Focus on Financial Inclusion: The partnership aligns with the larger goal of financial inclusion by bringing insurance solutions closer to customers who are already connected with the banking system. It also supports efforts to improve awareness around life insurance as a tool for family protection and long-term financial security.
- Support for Long-Term Financial Planning: Through this alliance, customers will be able to explore life insurance products designed for protection, savings, wealth creation, and family financial stability. This can help rural households plan better for future needs such as children’s education, emergencies, retirement, and income protection.
The partnership was formally announced in the presence of Shri Alok K Goel, Chairman, West Bengal Gramin Bank; Shri Rajesh Kumar Mishra, General Manager, WBGB; Soly Thomas, Deputy CEO & Chief Distribution Officer – Bancassurance, Canara HSBC Life Insurance; and Amit Joshi, National Business Head, Canara HSBC Life Insurance.

Bancassurance: A Growing Channel for Insurance Distribution
Bancassurance has emerged as an important model for expanding insurance access in India. Under this model, insurance companies partner with banks to offer insurance products to bank customers.
For rural and semi-urban areas, this model becomes even more important because banks often enjoy strong customer trust and physical reach. Regional Rural Banks like West Bengal Gramin Bank can help insurers reach households that may otherwise remain outside the formal insurance ecosystem.
The Canara HSBC Life Insurance and WBGB partnership is expected to further strengthen this model in West Bengal by combining banking outreach with insurance expertise.
With rural India continuing to remain a key focus area for financial services companies, the bancassurance alliance between West Bengal Gramin Bank and Canara HSBC Life Insurance is expected to support the broader goal of inclusive financial growth and insurance access for all.
