Union Minister George Kurian has resigned from the Narendra Modi Council of Ministers after the end of his Rajya Sabha term, bringing to a close a brief but politically significant stint in the Union government.

President Droupadi Murmu accepted Kurian’s resignation on June 23, 2026, on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The resignation took effect immediately under Article 75(2) of the Constitution, according to the official communique issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Kurian, 65, was serving as Minister of State for Minority Affairs and also held charge as Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. A senior BJP leader from Kerala, he was among the party’s most visible Christian faces at the national level.

Why George Kurian Resigned?

Kurian’s resignation came two days after his Rajya Sabha term ended on June 21. The BJP had not renominated him in its list for the June 18 Rajya Sabha elections, leaving his future in the Union government uncertain.

Constitutionally, the matter has an important nuance. A person who is not a Member of Parliament can continue as a minister for up to six months. This means Kurian did not automatically lose office the day his Rajya Sabha term ended. However, his resignation shows that the government chose not to use that six-month window in his case.

That makes the resignation more than a technical formality. It reflects a political decision.

Rashtrapati Bhavan issued an official statement. It said the President accepted his resignation "with immediate effect." The order came under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution.

Who Is George Kurian?

George Kurian is one of the BJP’s long-serving leaders from Kerala. He has been associated with the party since its early years and has held several organisational positions, including roles in the BJP’s Kerala unit and the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha.

A lawyer by profession, Kurian has also served as vice-chairman of the National Commission for Minorities. Within BJP circles, he was known as a loyal organisation man rather than a mass leader. He was often seen translating speeches of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah into Malayalam during their visits to Kerala.

The Kerala Connection and BJP's Christian Outreach

Kurian’s exit carries political meaning because he represented a constituency that went beyond his ministerial responsibilities. He belonged to Kerala’s Syro-Malabar Catholic community and was seen as an important face in the BJP’s outreach to Christian voters.

For years, the BJP has tried to expand its presence in Kerala, where Christians form an influential voting bloc. Kurian’s place in the Union government gave the party a symbolic bridge to that community, especially at a time when the BJP has been trying to move beyond its traditional support base in the state.

Same Deadline, Different Treatment

Kurian was not alone. Ravneet Singh Bittu also lost his Rajya Sabha re-nomination. Like Kurian, he was not included in the BJP’s Rajya Sabha list for the June 18 elections. But unlike Kurian, Bittu was not immediately dropped from the Union Council of Ministers.

Bittu, a former Congress leader from Punjab and the grandson of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, is politically important for the BJP’s Punjab plans. With Punjab Assembly elections due in 2027, the party may still see value in retaining him as a central face while preparing its state strategy.

This makes Kurian’s exit look less like a routine constitutional development and more like a selective political call.

What Happens Next?

The George Kurian resignation leaves the Minority Affairs portfolio vacant. The Modi government must now fill the post. The big question is whether BJP will pick another Christian minister. That choice will signal how serious the party is about minority outreach. It will matter especially as more state elections approach.
