The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh multi-state weather alert as rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are expected across large parts of India over the next few days. The warning comes at a time when the Southwest Monsoon has already entered Kerala and is gradually advancing towards more parts of peninsular India, the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and the Northeast.

Southwest Monsoon Reaches Kerala, Advances Further

The Southwest Monsoon officially set in over Kerala on June 4, three days later than its normal onset date of June 1. IMD said the monsoon has advanced into Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and more areas of the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.

The weather department has also stated that conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance further into Goa, parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, more areas of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and some parts of the Northeast over the next two to three days.

Delhi-NCR, Punjab and Haryana Likely to See Thunderstorms

Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab are expected to witness isolated rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds on June 6 and again around June 11–12, according to IMD’s latest bulletin.

For Delhi, the weather shift may bring temporary relief from heat, but residents have been advised to stay alert as sudden thunderstorms can lead to traffic disruption, falling tree branches, waterlogging and short-term power interruptions.

Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan on Weather Watch

Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan remain among the key states under observation due to the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.

East Uttar Pradesh is likely to see scattered rainfall activity on June 6 and again between June 10 and 12. West Uttar Pradesh may see rainfall around June 11 and 12.

Bihar is likely to experience isolated rainfall during June 6–8 and June 10–12, with heavier rainfall possible on June 6 and again around June 9–10.

IMD has also warned of thundersqualls in Bihar on June 6 and during June 9–10.

Why This Weather Alert Matters?

Thunderstorm alerts are not just routine seasonal updates. In India, lightning, squalls, hailstorms and strong winds often cause major localised damage, even when rainfall is not extremely heavy.

Recent severe weather events across North India have already shown how quickly thunderstorms can turn dangerous. Earlier in May, Uttar Pradesh witnessed a deadly thunderstorm spell that reportedly caused large-scale damage and fatalities. Such incidents underline the need for early warnings, public awareness and quick response at the district level.

IMD Advisory: What People Should Do During Thunderstorms

Residents in alert zones should avoid standing under trees, electric poles, temporary structures or metal hoardings during thunderstorms. People should move indoors as soon as lightning begins and avoid using open terraces, rooftops, open fields and water bodies.

Commuters should avoid parking vehicles under trees or near weak walls. Two-wheeler riders should wait in a safe covered area instead of driving through strong winds or heavy rain. Farmers and labourers working in open fields should stop outdoor work during lightning activity and move to a safe building.
