The Leadership Change: More Significant Than It Looks
Prashant Kumar, who had led YES Bank since the 2020 reconstruction and is widely credited with stabilizing the institution, completed his tenure and stepped down as CEO on April 5, 2026. In his place, Vinay Muralidhar Tonse has been appointed as the new CEO for a three-year term, effective April 6, 2026. Tonse previously served as Managing Director for Retail Business and Operations at State Bank of India.
The appointment has been approved by the Reserve Bank of India. A postal ballot for shareholders is scheduled for April 24, 2026.
A CEO change at a bank that is still in its post-reconstruction phase is a significant event. Tonse comes with strong retail banking credentials from SBI, which is exactly the kind of expertise YES Bank needs if it wants to deepen its retail and MSME loan book. But analyst sentiment has been cautious: Simply Wall St reports that analysts trimmed YES Bank's price target from approximately Rs 20.18 to Rs 19.55 following the leadership transition, citing slightly lower revenue growth assumptions.
Yes Bank's slippages during Q4 FY26 remained at 1.6% compared to 1.6% in the previous quarter and 2% in the year-ago period.
