Kotak Mahindra Bank MD Ashok Vaswani is stepping down. The bank confirmed this in a regulatory filing over the weekend. Kotak Mahindra Bank MD Ashok Vaswani will leave the top post once his three-year term ends on December 31, 2026. The bank has now started the search for his successor.
In the filing, the bank shared Vaswani's message to the board. He cited personal reasons. He said he does not wish to be reappointed once his current term is over.
Board Begins Succession Process
The bank's board met on June 27. They accepted Vaswani's decision. They also began a formal process to find a new leader. Kotak Mahindra Bank says the new MD and CEO will be named within the timelines set by the Reserve Bank of India. The RBI must approve the new candidate too. Vaswani's Journey at Kotak Mahindra Bank
Vaswani became Kotak Mahindra Bank MD and CEO on January 1, 2024. He took over from founder Uday Kotak. Uday Kotak had led the bank for more than two decades before stepping down. Vaswani's appointment marked a big shift. For the first time, the bank brought in a leader from outside the founding family.
A Career Spanning Global Banking
Vaswani has over 35 years of experience in banking. He has worked across major global markets. Before joining Kotak Mahindra Bank, he was President of Pagaya Technologies, a fintech company. Earlier, he worked at Barclays. There, he led the UK consumer banking business. He later took charge of Barclays' global consumer, private, corporate, and payments operations. During this time, he led a major digital overhaul. He helped redesign the bank's technology and customer experience.
He also worked at Citigroup. There, he served as CEO of the bank's Asia-Pacific consumer banking division.

What Happens Next
With Kotak Mahindra Bank MD Ashok Vaswani confirming his exit, all eyes are now on his successor. The bank currently has three whole-time directors in senior roles.
Two questions remain. Will the bank promote someone from within? Or will it look outside again, the way it did when it picked Vaswani in 2024? The coming months should make that clear.
