Mumbai, September 24, 2026: Central Depository Services (India) Limited (CDSL) has appointed Kinjal Shah as Chief Technology Officer (CTO), bringing an experienced capital-markets technology professional into one of the most critical technology roles in India's securities-market infrastructure.

The appointment became effective on September 22, 2026, according to disclosures around the management change. Shah has also been classified as Senior Management Personnel under the SEBI Listing Regulations and Key Management Personnel under the SEBI (Depositories and Participants) Regulations. He succeeds Amit Mahajan in the CTO role.

CDSL has subsequently updated its management team to list Shah as Chief Technology Officer, while Mahajan is listed as Executive Director – Vertical 1.

At first glance, this is another senior technology appointment in India's BFSI sector. But the timing makes the Kinjal Shah CDSL CTO appointment more significant. Shah is moving from the technology leadership of a securities business closer to the investor-facing end of the market to an institution operating the underlying digital infrastructure on which a large part of India's securities ecosystem depends.

That change in scale—and in responsibility—is what makes the appointment worth watching.

Who Is Kinjal Shah, CDSL's New CTO?

Shah joins CDSL after serving as Chief Technology Officer at YES Securities. According to details accompanying the appointment, the 47-year-old technology executive brings around 25 years of professional experience, with earlier associations including NSE, Edelweiss Global Markets, Larsen & Toubro and J.P. Morgan Chase. He has spent about three years with YES Securities.

His educational background includes a master's degree in Computer Science and a bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering. Published profiles also show his career spanning software engineering, enterprise technology, technology management and financial-market systems.

This capital-markets background could prove particularly relevant at CDSL. Technology at a depository is not simply an internal IT function. It forms part of the infrastructure through which securities ownership records, dematerialised holdings and transactions involving millions of investor accounts are maintained.

A depository's technology architecture therefore has to address a very different combination of priorities: scale, availability, cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, transaction integrity, resilience and investor trust.

Shah Takes Charge as CDSL Moves Deeper Into Its Scale Era

The scale confronting the new CDSL Chief Technology Officer is substantial.

CDSL reported 19,09,97,499 investor accounts, excluding closed accounts, as of August 31, 2026. Its latest operating data also showed 50,685 live companies and 589 depository participants.

According to CDSL's FY26 Financial Results, the depository had crossed 18 crore demat accounts by the end of March 2026. During its FY26 results announcement, Managing Director and CEO Nehal Vora described the milestone as evidence of the growing participation of Indian households in securities markets while emphasising continued investment in people and technology.

That expansion changes the technology conversation.

When digital financial platforms grow from serving millions of users to hundreds of millions of accounts, technology leadership increasingly becomes a question of capacity engineering, resilience and infrastructure design, rather than simply introducing new digital features.

For CDSL, every additional wave of retail participation can mean higher expectations around system availability, data processing, transaction volumes, cybersecurity safeguards and interoperability across an increasingly digital capital-market ecosystem.

Shah is therefore assuming the CTO role at a point when CDSL's challenge is not merely to digitise—it is already fundamentally digital—but to keep strengthening technology infrastructure while the size and complexity of the ecosystem continue to increase.

A Planned Technology Leadership Transition

Shah takes over the CTO responsibilities from Amit Mahajan, who had led CDSL's technology function since 2019.

CDSL's leadership profile credits Mahajan with overseeing significant technology transformation during a period in which the depository's beneficial-owner base expanded sharply. His tenure included work around infrastructure modernisation, cybersecurity, data warehousing and newer software development and testing practices.

The September management disclosure was also part of a planned transition. CDSL had indicated earlier that Mahajan would continue as CTO until a new incumbent joined. With Shah assuming the position on September 22, Mahajan ceased to hold the CTO role and continues in the company's senior leadership as Executive Director – Vertical 1.

That continuity matters for a market infrastructure institution, where technology leadership transitions have to take place without disrupting systems that underpin everyday market activity.

Cybersecurity, Scale and Resilience Will Shape CDSL's Next Phase

For an ordinary investor opening a demat account through a broker or financial application, the underlying depository infrastructure is rarely visible.

Yet much of the seamless experience investors now expect from digital securities markets depends on systems operating reliably behind the interface.

CDSL's role sits between investors, depository participants, issuers and other components of the securities ecosystem. Its systems maintain beneficial-owner account data and support the electronic infrastructure required for securities to be held in dematerialised form. CDSL's operating framework states that beneficial-owner accounts are operated through depository participants while the underlying account data is maintained at the CDSL level.

That makes the CTO's office particularly consequential.

As India's investor base becomes larger and more digitally active, the technology behind depositories has to handle not only growth but increasingly demanding expectations around speed, security, uptime, scalability and operational resilience.

What the CDSL Technology Transition Means for Investors

Announcing the leadership change, CDSL said Shah's experience would strengthen its technology leadership as the organisation builds for the next phase of India's securities market. The company simultaneously announced the elevation of Farokh Patel to Chief Regulatory Officer, pointing to a broader strengthening of its technology and regulatory leadership structure.

For CDSL, the appointment comes at a stage when its operating scale is already unprecedented in its own history.

The bigger question, therefore, is not simply what new products its technology team can build. It is how CDSL can continue operating dependable, secure and future-ready market infrastructure as millions more Indians enter formal investing and as securities-market technology itself evolves.
