India Strengthens Air Defence with ₹1,950 Crore Indigenous Radar Deal with BEL
The agreement, formalised in New Delhi under the ‘Buy (Indian–IDDM)’ category—short for Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured—signals a continued push by the government to reduce reliance on foreign defence imports!

In a decisive move to bolster India’s air defence capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹1,950 crore contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of two advanced mountain radar systems for the Indian Air Force.
The agreement, formalised in New Delhi under the ‘Buy (Indian–IDDM)’ category—short for Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured—signals a continued push by the government to reduce reliance on foreign defence imports and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.
What sets this deal apart is its strong indigenous foundation. The radar systems have been developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), a premier laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). BEL, one of India’s leading defence PSUs, will be responsible for production, ensuring that the entire value chain—from design to deployment—remains within the country.
Designed for India’s Toughest Terrains
These mountain radars are specifically engineered for high-altitude and complex terrains, such as India’s northern and northeastern borders. In such regions, conventional radar systems often face limitations due to uneven topography, extreme weather conditions, and line-of-sight challenges.
The newly procured systems are expected to provide:
- Enhanced long-range surveillance
- Improved target detection and tracking in mountainous regions
- Faster response capability against aerial threats
Defence experts suggest that these radars will play a critical role in strengthening situational awareness, particularly along sensitive border areas where real-time intelligence is crucial.
Boost to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ in Defence
This deal is another important step under the government’s broader ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative, which prioritises indigenous defence production and innovation. Over the past few years, India has significantly increased its focus on domestic procurement, with a growing share of defence contracts being awarded to Indian companies.
According to recent defence procurement trends, more than 70% of capital acquisition budgets are now earmarked for domestic industry—a clear indication of the shift towards self-reliance.
Economic and Strategic Impact
Beyond strengthening national security, the project is also expected to generate employment and support India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, including MSMEs and ancillary industries involved in the supply chain.
Moreover, such indigenous developments enhance India’s potential as a defence exporter. BEL, in particular, has been expanding its global footprint, supplying radar and electronic warfare systems to several countries.
A Step Towards Future-Ready Defence
As India continues to modernise its armed forces in response to evolving security challenges, investments like these highlight a clear strategic direction—building technologically advanced, terrain-specific, and self-reliant defence systems.
With increasing geopolitical complexities and the need for rapid response mechanisms, the induction of these advanced radar systems will significantly strengthen the Indian Air Force’s operational readiness in some of the most demanding environments.
